Steel, 60 thousand workers at risk in Italy between the former Ilva and JSW

by admin

There are 60 thousand steel workers, between direct and indirect, at risk in Italy among the former Ilva plants, now Acciaierie d’Italia, Taranto, Genoa, Novi Ligure, Racconigi and Marghera and the Piombino steel mills, currently in the hands of the Indians by JSW. And this despite the fact that the sector is in a favorable situation thanks to a strong demand for steel and the post-pandemic recovery and many companies are doing very well.

This was declared on November 8, in a press conference in Rome, by the national leaders of Fim Cisl, Fiom Cgil and Uilm presenting the 8-hour strike that will take place on November 10 in all the industrial sites involved with a series of Rome, under the headquarters of the ministries most directly interested in the two events. The most important production center is the former Ilva di Taranto, for which the unions speak of “the situation is dramatic” and where “even if in some cases there has been a rise in production, this has not translated into an increase in employment “.

Production below potential

Currently, the Taranto plant is at the “lowest levels of production” for engineering companies. According to the numbers provided by the unions, “in Taranto there are now 2,300 workers in ordinary layoffs, plus another 1,600 of Ilva in extraordinary administration, also in cash but extraordinary. And of these 1,600 of Ilva in as nobody says anything, it seems that they have been declassified ». In addition, there are 4 thousand of the related industries, defined by the trade unions as “the most exposed, the most mistreated” as there are delays in the payment of invoices by Acciaierie d’Italia to “satellite” companies.

Continuing the exhibition, the three metalworking federations say that «in Genoa another 200 are in layoffs in rotation, plus another 280 of Ilva in extraordinary administration. In Genoa, despite the market demand, about 700 thousand tons are produced against one million tons that can be produced “.

«In Novi Ligure – it is highlighted – there are 100 fewer workers in the workforce than the agreements and 200 are placed in the cash register. Novi Ligure has production potential of 1.100 million tons but produces only 700 thousand ». According to Rocco Palombella, of Uilm, «from the distant July 2019, that is, after a few months of the acquisition of Ilva by ArcelorMittal, there was the beginning of the layoffs, from Taranto to Genoa, from Novi Ligure to Marghera. From the market crisis fund, we moved on to Covid and still today Acciaierie d’Italia has continued to ask for layoffs ».
