Stellantis and Foxconn allied on electric and connected cars. The Chinese market and software (and perhaps the Apple car) are targeted

Stellantis ed Foxconn have signed a strategic partnership. And tomorrow, May 18, the fourth global auto group and the electronics and assembly giant will announce the details of their alliance. The details are not yet known, but it is the result of months of negotiations between the two companies based on a negotiation started last year, it was announced the January 17, 2020, between Fca and the Hon Hai Precision Industries (this is the full name of Foxconn). A long time, therefore, almost a year and a half, but the pandemic delayed the operation and above all, the constitution of Stellantis was put in the middle, which incorporated FCA and PSA starting last January.

The objective of the joint venture paritaria aims to develop and produce electric and connected cars to enter the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) business. The FIH Mobile subsidiary, specialized in assembly, will also be involved. Stellantis and Foxconn will combine their expertise in automotive design, engineering and manufacturing and mobile software technology to focus on the fast growing market for Bev (Battery electric vehicle).

It should be remembered that Foxconn has announced an ā€œopen sourceā€ platform for electric cars: an architecture that includes hardware (mechanics) and software (battery management, etc.). But that’s not all Foxconn says it is ready to introduce solid-state batteries in 2024, that is the high-capacity cells that will revolutionize the electric car by being more efficient and more energetically ā€œdenseā€ than lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolyte.

After all, the electric car is crossing the boundaries of the car industry to extend into other sectors, arousing the interest of protagonists in electronics, and in the world of smartphones in particular. Xiaomi, a major player in the sector, two months ago announced ten billion in investments to create its own range of electric cars, indeed smart cars.

And the presence of Foxconn, historical partner of Apple for the production of iPhone it is extremely emblematic also because for some months the rumors about Apple Car, the elusive car of the Apple of Cupertino, which for five years now appears and disappears from the radar of the media. But lately, despite the cancellation of the project Titan, the times would seem ripe also because Apple has to understand if there is life after the iPhone and the car could really be in its plans. And maybe now with the landing of Xiaomi and with similar announcements of Huawei, Apple could challenge the automotive world, but at the moment that “best car ever” has been anticipated by the Chinese. But perhaps Apple looks forward to solid-state batteries that represent a quantum leap in technology (as was the multitouch display in the 2008 iPhone).
