Stop fraud, more 17% of tomato imports from China

ROME (ITALPRESS) – The activity of combating fraud is important in a situation in which in 2020 imports of tomato derivatives from China increased by 17%, which with the shipment of 69 million kilos is the main supplier to Italy in the year of Covid. This is what emerges from Coldiretti’s analysis of Istat data disclosed on the occasion of the seizure by the carabinieri for the food protection of 4,477 tons of tomatoes, mostly canned packs (3,500 tons) labeled as ‘100% Italian tomato’ and / or ‘100% Tuscan tomato’ ready for marketing, the rest (977 tons) semi-finished product and tomato concentrate from abroad (non-EU), in drums and bins, in the Italian Food spa deposit of the Petti Group in the plant of Venturina (Livorno). Thanks to the pressing of Coldiretti, in fact, the obligation to indicate on the label the origin for peeled tomatoes, pulp, concentrate and other tomato by-products had arrived thanks to the publication in the Official Gazette 47 of 26 February 2018, of the interministerial decree for the compulsory origin on products such as preserves and sauces, as well as concentrates and sauces, which are composed of at least 50% tomato derivatives. However, it is necessary to be vigilant since in the last year there has been an increase in landings from abroad of tomato derivatives which almost half arrive from China in industrial drums of 200 kilos of concentrate weight to be reworked and packaged. Tomato derivatives are the most appreciated condiment by Italians who consume about 30 kilos per person per year at home, in a restaurant or in a pizzeria according to Coldiretti’s estimates. To be preferred, were in order – concludes Coldiretti – passata, pulps or chopped tomatoes, peeled tomatoes and concentrates. (ITALPRESS). mgg / com 27-Apr-21 18:04
