Summer holiday sting: average increases of 11% between car trips, restaurants and bathing establishments

by admin

Increases in price lists throughout Italy for the entire tourism sector. From travel by car, train or plane, to stays in accommodation facilities, passing through the rental of umbrellas, deck chairs and sun loungers and drinks at bars and restaurants, all this summer costs more. It is the denunciation of the Codacons that points out how the shops to the public, the beaches, the hotels, have changed their tariff policies, applying increases aimed at compensating for the losses in recent months, the higher costs of sanitizing and securing the premises, and the quota of presences which, in fact, reduces revenues.

According to the association’s estimates, in 2021 the per capita expenditure for a 10-day summer holiday will cost on average 11% more, passing – considering the expenditure for travel, stays, various services, meals and drinks – from 898 euros from 2020 to 996 euros in 2021, with an increase of +98 euros per person.

Complicating the situation on the transport front are the increases in petrol prices due to the jump in the price of oil. Those who travel by car will have to take into account a higher expense for refueling by + 16% compared to 2020 due to the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel, which lead to a full tank cost today over 11 euros more than last year. Train fares have not undergone increases, but the reduction of the maximum capacity on board has led to a limitation of discounts, offers and promotions aimed at passengers. For airplanes, the basic rates have remained unchanged, but the costs of all other services connected to flights have increased, such as the transport of baggage (including hand luggage), the choice of seat, insurance policies, the possibility of changing or cancel the reservation, etc. Extra-costs applied by both low-cost and traditional airlines and which, added up, come to cost more than double the price of the flight.

Shifting attention to the beaches, throughout Italy there are average increases of + 5% for the daily rental of umbrellas, sunbeds and deck chairs, with peaks of + 40% on the Amalfi Coast. The costs of drinks, meals and aperitifs have also increased at the beaches, in the order of + 10%;

The accommodation facilities (hotels, b & bs, resorts and holiday homes) with Covid have significantly changed their rate policies: not only increases for the costs of the overnight stay, but those who intend to stay in a refundable structure in case of cancellation of the trip, must put into account a higher expense up to + 100% compared to the same “non-refundable” solution, with a consequent increase in the costs of a holiday;

Finally, bars and restaurants. Having breakfast at the bar, having an aperitif, having lunch or dinner at the restaurant costs on average between + 5% and + 10% compared to last year.
