Terminal congestion and skyrocketing freight rates but Italian ports are growing

Serious criticalities in the management of supply chain global, a surge in freight rates that shows no signs of stopping, port congestion problems, particularly felt in the Northern European terminals, which make scheduled services less reliable.

These are just some of the problems that the world of Italian ports has to face every day, as it has to deal with the new reality born in the post-pandemic and with the war between Russia and Ukraine. Nonetheless, Italian ports grow, marking overall, in the first quarter of 2022, + 6.5% in terms of flows of goods and + 9.7% for containers (measured in TEU, units equal to a 20-foot container). , compared to January-March 2021.

Unpredictable events

These issues were addressed during the Assoporti assembly (the first in attendance after the Covid emergency), during which a report by Srm, the research center of Intesa Sanpaolo, was also disclosed, which helped to take stock on the situation of the docks in Italy and in the world.

“As already happened during the various phases of the pandemic – said Rodolfo Giampieri, president of Assoporti, the ongoing conflict, which must be condemned, confronts us with the unpredictability of events and how these can change the scenario in which we operate in a completely sudden ».

As stated in the Srm study, in fact, in January 2022 world GDP was expected to grow by 4.4% but in April, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the percentage was reduced to 3.6%. Forecasts for international trade are downsized from + 6% to + 5% and inflation rises from 3.87% to 7.4%.
