Terna: electricity consumption increased in August, share of renewable sources rose

In August, electricity consumption in Italy recorded strong growth, with values ​​that were decidedly higher even than those of the pre-Covid period. According to data from Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, the monthly electricity requirement was equal to 26.8 billion kWh: demand grew by 2.7% compared to August 2020 and by 2.4 % on August 2019. The share of renewable sources also increased: clean energies covered 41% of the monthly electricity demand, compared to 39% a year ago and 37% in 2019. The positive performance continues this month as well in the industrial sector: the Imcei index recorded a substantial increase of 10.6% over 2020 and 9.2% over 2019, thanks to the growth of almost all the sectors monitored by Terna.

In detail, August had one more working day (22 vs 21) and an average monthly temperature about 0.4 ° C lower than in August 2020. The data for electricity demand, seasonally adjusted and corrected by the effects of calendar and temperature , is up by 2.4%. At the territorial level, the trend change in August was positive everywhere: + 0.8% in the North, + 3.1% in the Center and + 5.9% in the South. calendar and temperature recorded an increase of 1.7% compared to the previous month (July 2021). In the first eight months of 2021, electricity demand in Italy grew by + 6.7% compared to the same period last year (the figure unchanged in adjusted terms).
