ROME. Antonio Serpi is the general secretary of the Sim (Italian Military Union) of the Carabinieri. On the day of the 208th anniversary of the foundation of the Arma relaunches the need to increase salaries.
What goal does it set itself?
“Our next step will be to write a letter to Prime Minister Mario Draghi, and for information also to Ministers Renato Brunetta and Lorenzo Guerini, to urge an adjustment of the salary to the increase in inflation”.
What is your request based on?
“The data speak for themselves: inflation has hit Italian families and the carabinieri contracts are frozen at the 2018 salary. The renewal of the 2019-21 contract covered only 2.95% of the increase in inflation, so even if a June the new contract was applied we would be down by 5.15% ».

What do you expect from the government?
“The government must understand that we do not have the tools to cope with cost increases, as happens for other professions, so we represent a category to be protected and this can only happen by adjusting wages to inflation, as stated by the Minister. Orlando. But this adjustment must be immediate because the increase in costs and energy is already a reality. Furthermore, I can affirm that the public administration, also because of this, is no longer in good health and this is reflected in the services to citizens ”.
When will the next work contract for the carabinieri be signed?
«By this year with a three-year duration, therefore until 2025. Therefore we must act quickly and not waste precious time. I therefore hope that a table will soon be convened with the social partners to give concrete answers to those who have seen their purchasing power reduced today. The work of the carabiniere must be protected as much as possible also from an economic point of view ».
