The Boost of Online Learning During COVID-19

by admin

The coronavirus pandemic took the world by storm, almost putting a halt to everything, including education. Gatherings were prohibited, and soon, schools had to come up with a way to continue learning. This is where the internet came in.

In a bid to push learning forward, despite the coronavirus, the use of online classes and virtual online meetings started to increase. Distance learning was the only way to go and could only be done using the internet. Education would have suffered a great deal if these online courses weren’t provided.

Even now that Covid has begun to fade, people still prefer to receive their education online because it makes learning easier.

Despite the horrible virus, the online turnaround it brought to education is here to stay. With that, this article would take you into an in-depth ride on how covid boosted online learning and what this means for everyone.

The Beginning

E-learning can be explained as a structured course or learning experience that takes place via electronic media, typically with the use of the interweb. This is not to say that this form of teaching is a new phenomenon, no. E-learning, as an educational tool, dates back to more than a decade ago. To ease education and curb the students’ population, some schools made some of their courses available online for easy access. The only problem was, the response was low, and this technology was not evenly spread across all states or countries.

The World Health Organization announced the spread of the virus in 2020. As at that time, there was no shutdown as the outbreak was confined to Wuhan, China, since December 8, 2019. The whole world sympathized but continued their activities since they thought they were not directly affected by it.

However, in March 2020, WHO came out publicly to announce that this viral spread has now become a global pandemic. Then, people always believed that the virus was spread upon contact with an infected animal, but when it began to spread rapidly inside and outside China, with over 100 recorded deaths, it became apparent that this severe disease was highly contagious and could be spread through human contact. To curb this viral infection from spreading this way, the world was forced to shut down, and this caused a sudden shift in every sector, including education.

The Rise of e-Learning

The educational sector was inarguably the most affected, seeing as the pandemic put billions of children across the world out of school. Out of the need to protect children, every educational institution had to temporarily shut their doors and parents were tasked with keeping their wards at home.

At this point, remote learning became the only alternative through which teaching could continue. Educational institutions started to implement measures to bring all their students together to keep learning, seeing as the traditional method was on a temporary halt. Parents were not left out and always looked for academic apps and sites to keep their wards sharp.

Zoom, a video conferencing app, recorded a 30-fold usage boost in April 2020, with about 300 million daily participants ranging from kids to businessmen and women who needed to stay in touch with their work.

With people having no other choice than to resort to online education, it became apparent that this was the only way to go. The importance of  purchasing education technologies and creating elearning websites increased with the usage of these online learning apps, and the providers began to notice huge folds of usage ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of people.

How e-Learning Changed the Narrative for Good

In a world where every sector was shut down and kids were forced to stop their education for a pandemic virus spreading like wildfire, e-learning came to the rescue. There are also several ways by which people have benefited from this:

Facilitates Knowledge

Aside from acting as a means of communication, students quickly realized that there was a wealth of information and assistance on the web, which they put at their disposal. Unlike when local means of pen and paper were used, the coronavirus pandemic forced children/youths to be reliant on technology, and they had no choice but to seek help from these means. With apps like Khan Academy, edX, Udacity, Coursera, and others, knowledge became easy and accessible.

Stress-Free

Besides getting knowledge from technology, another upside is the ease with which it is obtained. In the comfort of your home, and with a flick of your fingers, you will be presented with various opportunities to learn. Students could get instant help with assignments and projects through various academic platforms like Paperell, which were created just for this purpose. Packed with various professional writers with enviable Masters and PhD degrees, students can rest assured that they are getting the best hire for their projects no matter what.

Not only can you purchase paper services on the web, but parents can also hire digital academic tutors for their wards. This has many advantages as the schedule is flexible, and your child stays protected by social distance.

Knowledge Retention

Since lectures took place on Zoom or any other platform, these lessons can be watched as many times as the student probably wishes. You have the option of recording your content and going over it again until you’re sure you get it. Not only is this more cost-effective, but it also helps improve retention.

Challenges Of This Method

While there are so many advantages to e-learning, it also comes with some challenges that can not be overlooked. A few of which are:

Economic Differences

Economic capabilities can affect the ability of a child to participate effectively in e-learning. Some of the best educational apps like Udemy, Coursera, edX, Duolingo, Youtube require strong web access. Some even require monthly or annual subscriptions to access the premium section of their services. Asides from wifi and subscriptions, you also need good devices like smartphones, laptops, or tablets to access these apps easily.

The problem is, not every parent can provide these tools for their children. Not every child has a smartphone or a laptop, and some children do have a smartphone but no web access. This makes learning difficult for them and can cause challenges when they return to school.

Inability To Grasp

Some children require personal attention when learning. They find it difficult to grasp certain concepts independently and would need major interactions with a teacher to correctly understand the subject. These kids will find e-learning a little challenging,

Conclusion

All in all, the boost of e-learning by the virus is an event the world has come to appreciate. Even now that the lockdown has been lifted and kids can now return to the classroom, e-learning remains rampant as people have seen how it made learning so much faster and easier.
