The fake made in Italy at the table is now worth 120 billion euros

The value of fake Made in Italy agri-food products in the world rises from 100 to 120 billion: the alarm was raised by Coldiretti and Filiera Italia at the inauguration of Summer Fancy Food 2022, the most important trade fair in New York dedicated to food specialties . At the Italian Pavilion, at the Javits Center, this year the made in Italy producers are present in great strength and the American market is giving great satisfaction to our products. Yet, Coldiretti and Filiera Italia say, more than two out of three tricolor agri-food products are fake, without any productive or employment link with our country.
At the top of the ranking of the most fake products are cheeses, starting with Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano, with the production of copies that has surpassed that of the originals. Among the cured meats the most prestigious are cloned, from Parma to San Daniele, but also mortadella Bologna or salame cacciatore.

In the United States alone, the value of Italian sounding has reached 40 billion euros, with as much as 90% of Italian-type cheeses in the United States actually made in Wisconsin, California and New York. In 2021 the production of imitations of Italian cheeses in the United States reached a record quantity of over 2.6 billion kilos, with an exponential growth in the last 30 years, so much so that it even surpassed the production of American cheeses such as Cheddar, Colby , Monterrey and Jack which in the same year amounted to 2.5 million kilos.

“It is true that in the United States there is a lot of Italian sounding, but here at Fancy Food I noticed a great interest from American buyers and journalists for Made in Italy”, explains Luigi Scordamaglia, managing director of Filiera Italia, in these days in New York. «In just ten years – he remembers – Italian agri-food exports to the US have gone from 3 to 6 billion. All kinds of products grow: from wines, which are the first item of exports, to cheeses, from extra virgin olive oil to cured meats. Just yesterday, during the inauguration of the Italian Pavilion at the fair, we launched a challenge: within five years the American one must overthrow Germany and become the first export market for made in Italy agri-food ”.

According to Scordamaglia, American consumers seem increasingly interested in the quality of the food they buy, the story behind each product and its sustainability: “This is why they are surprised when we tell them that if they look for the naturalness and environmental protection behind the food they eat , they must be careful: there is a part of Silicon Valley that is instead investing in synthetic food, that is, on a food model that will annihilate any distinctiveness ». First the meat, then the fish, now also the milk can be created in the laboratory: «It is a pity that the effects on the human organism are not yet known – says Scordamaglia – and no one seems to be doing research in this sense. The European Union itself prefers to finance two start-ups that produce synthetic meat, rather than subsidizing research on the healthiness of these products ”.
