The logistics of Genoa, the first half of the year closed positively

by admin

Affected first by the collapse of the Morandi bridge, which was followed by the emergency for maintenance work and inspections on the motorway network (which created large traffic jams) and the effects of the coronavirus epidemic, the logistics sector in the area of Genoa suffered significantly. However, the first half of 2021 marked a turnaround: it closed positively for companies in the transport, distribution and logistics sectors, particularly targeted by the consequences of the pandemic in 2020. Confindustria Genoa records this in its report on economic indicators.

The turnover of the sector increased by 4.6% in its internal component and by 3.3% in the foreign one. “Keeping in mind – the document reads – that the changes concern the comparison with the first half of 2020, in which the health emergency and the blocking of economic activities occurred, the turnover of port terminal operators has increased (+ 11.9% Italian turnover, + 4.4% foreign turnover), benefiting gross margins (+ 15.7%). Similarly, signs of recovery come from logistics and transport companies: turnover is up, both with regard to the domestic and foreign markets. On the contrary, the energy distribution companies have achieved declining results, compared to the first half of 2020: gross margins are in marked contraction (-7.3%), while sales prices are close to + 19% ».

The freight traffic of the port of Genoa marked an increase, although in tonnage it has yet to recover compared to the precovid levels of January-May 2019. In comparison with the first five months of 2020, the goods passed through the port increased by 9.6 %: conventional traffic increased by 18.5%, while containerized traffic by 4.1%, due to the phenomenon of the integral repositioning of empty containers: in terms of TEU (unit of measurement equal to a 20-foot container) ‘increase reaches 12.7%. The increases also concern liquid bulk (+ 10.6%) and solid bulk (+38.2). Mineral oils show an increase of 15.9%.

As far as passenger traffic is concerned, Confindustria Genoa reports, «the share of cruise passengers continues to decline: the prevention measures for cruise travel and in general the restrictions on travel that still persist discourage taking this kind of travel. Obviously the comparison data is with the months of January-February 2020, prior to the health emergency ». The Genoa airport “continued to record decreases in the number of movements carried out and passengers transported in the half year, despite the reactivation of some routes: in the period January-May 2021, the drops were respectively -13.5 % and -63.9%. Compared to before the Covid emergency, in the same period movements fell by 60% and the number of passengers fell by 88.1% “.
