The rise in gas prices affects Italian families: the secret of savings lies in the free market

by admin

With the increase in the cost of natural gas recorded at the beginning of October, the Italian market has been hit by a new wave of price increases, which will inevitably also affect end consumers. Precisely for this reason, it can become essential to identify each saving margin, in an attempt to lighten the final balance in the bill. According to the joint analysis of Tariffs.Segugio.it and SOStariffe.it, a slight saving is possible, but only by abandoning the protected market.

Average consumption of natural gas in Italy

According to the Observatory, the average annual consumption of natural gas by Italian households is 961 m3 per year, with significant regional fluctuations depending on the climatic conditions of the territories. In the regions of Northern Italy, for example, the average consumption almost always exceeds one thousand m3 per year, with a peak of 1208 m3 recorded in Trentino. High consumption is also recorded in Piedmont (1,129 m3) and Veneto (1,200 m3), while Liguria has the lowest consumption among all Italian regions (666m 3), thanks also to the milder climate.

As expected, moving towards Southern Italy there is a generalized decline in average consumption, with the minimum value reached in Sicily, where the average annual consumption is 727 m3. Among the southern regions, however, the one with the highest consumption is Molise, which records an average figure of 1003 m3.

The annual expenditure in a Greater Protection scheme

On the basis of the consumption data collected, the survey then estimated the average annual cost of bills for each region. According to the Observatory, the national average for supply under the Greater Protection regime is around 723 euros.

The regional differences are considerable. The minimum value is found in Liguria, where the annual expenditure is around 537 euros. In four Italian regions, on the other hand – Trentino, Piedmont, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna – the average annual expenditure of 800 euros is exceeded. The primacy is, however, that of the Veneto where the average cost in the bill per family is 861 euros. Five other regions exceed the national average: Lombardy, Valle d’Aosta, Friuli, Marche and Tuscany. In the South, costs remain considerably lower, with an average cost that drops to 619 euros in Sicily.

Saving money by switching to the Free Market

To temporarily limit the sting for families in the fourth quarter of 2021, the Government has already adopted specific measures, such as cutting system charges, strengthening the social bonus and reducing VAT to 5%. The bills for active supplies in the regulated market, the price of which is set by Arera, will be most affected. The solution can therefore be that of a move to the Free Market.

On the basis of the data collected, the average savings obtainable with the transition to the Free Market was calculated, considering the tariff conditions in October: it would be 53 euros per year on average. By activating a convenient rate, it is possible to take advantage of a lower price of the raw material than that practiced in the Maggior Tutela service. The lower cost of the gas consumed will be reflected in the bill and, therefore, in the annual cost for the supply. The average annual expenditure for gas by choosing the Free Market will be 669 euros against 723.

Savings on a regional basis: the greatest advantages in Trentino

The analysis on a regional basis also highlights the different savings margins available to households based on the location of their supply. Generally speaking, savings are higher for regions where average consumption is higher than the national average. The maximum saving, therefore, is that of Trentino, where it is possible to find up to 76 euros less per year in the bill.

Above the national average, as far as savings are concerned, we also find Piedmont, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Friuli, Molise and Valle d’Aosta. The minimum savings, on the other hand, are found in Sicily where it is possible to cut annual spending by about 37 euros per year. The average saving is less than 40 euros per year also in Campania, Puglia and Liguria.
