Taking for granted the stop in 2035 on the sale of thermal cars has made it possible to stop investments in thermal and concentrate financial energy on electricity, which requires a lot of them. The “two ovens” policy is expensive. If we add that the electric car is strategic to compete in China, the largest and most promising market in the world, it is clear the design of the German manufacturers, who may have to revise their plans. Despite the growth in sales of electric cars, homes know that even a double-digit market share may never reach 100%, due to objective limitations in infrastructure and the transformation of the style of mobility that batteries require. In recent years we have seen on several occasions the declarations to this effect by some top manufacturers, which however remained such. Now it is the trade unions and countries where the car workforce is crucial that are making themselves heard, worried about the impact on employment. Not everyone in Italy believed in the arrest in 2035.
Already at the end of October, in a survey by the think tank AgitaLab, half of the operators had replied that they believed it unlikely (20%) or sure (32%) that the stop would not be confirmed, while one in five thought that the odds were half and half. In Glasgow then France, Germany, Italy and Spain refused to sign the stop to the petrol engine. At the beginning of December, the Commission accepted the request, made by several ministers meeting in Ecofin, to classify gas and nuclear power in the sources of the green taxonomy. It does not directly concern the automotive industry, but it is a very important sign of how much the bath of realism that was Glasgow has affected the orientations of Brussels.
Claiming to focus on renewable energies, but also on stable energy sources, means that the orientation is one of effective confrontation with concrete possibilities, in search of not only environmental but also social and economic sustainability. Of course, the Committee for Energy Transition (ISCED) has also hypothesized the stop to 2035 in Italy, but it would be news that escaped without everyone’s agreement, which was followed by a statement by the Deputy Minister of Economic Development Gilberto Pichetto, in which states that the commitment must be of all countries, that it cannot jeopardize the survival of the auto sector and that therefore the economic and social sustainability of the transition cannot be ignored.
From now on it is plausible that the various chapters, and therefore also the car, are faced with the right tension towards an improvement in emissions, both harmful and climate-altering, but also distinguishing what is possible from what appears to the more unrealistic and ideological.
