The Varese tram train on the Region’s agenda

by admin

The Varese tramway project collects a point in its favor. The Lombardy Region, which is also the majority shareholder of Ferrovie Nord, took the situation in hand and, during a videoconference with the entities and stakeholders (promoter group, Municipalities of Varese and Laveno), defined the project “worthy of further study”. The Regional Councilor for Infrastructures, Claudia Maria Terzi, has already called a second meeting at the beginning of September, in which the technical aspects of the project will be further investigated, the costs will be carefully evaluated (it has been estimated that the tramtreno operation requires an investment of approximately 200 million) and the role of Ferrovie Nord, the industrial pivot of the operation, will be discussed more widely. Satisfied Giovanni Arioli, spokesman for the group promoting the tram train: «The project has officially entered the Lombardy Region agenda. It was what we wanted. For our part, we have reaffirmed the great interest of the territory in this work ». The heart of the project consists in the transformation of the current Varese-Laveno Mombello railway section into a tramway, with an intensification of the trains at 4/6 per hour and with an increased number of stops compared to that of the current stations. In practice, a sort of surface metro would be created with 16 stops on the current Fnm line (Ferrovie Nord Milano), preserving the basic infrastructure, which is fully compatible with the new service.
