Tobacco, soon a supply chain table also on the tax side

by admin

“We will organize a meeting in the coming weeks to talk about tobacco at 360 degrees because we cannot talk about the agricultural part without talking about the part relating to taxation”. The announcement is made by the Undersecretary for Agriculture, Gian Marco Centinaio, who aims to have the Ministry of Economy and Finance also sit at the table in the sector. According to Centinaio “at this moment there is a need to create a supply chain, in the true sense of the word, between the various ministries, between the players in the sector so that we can work together in a serene way”. From his point of view, the table “cannot only be agricultural, otherwise we risk singing it and playing it alone”.

The convening of a sector table was requested by the main agricultural organizations which in recent weeks have signed supply chain agreements with the large multinationals in the sector. Philip Morris Italia and Coldiretti confirmed the agreement for the purchase of leaf tobacco grown in Italy which provides for investments of up to a total of 500 million euros between 2019 and 2023. For Coldiretti this is the «most significant investment in sector by a private company that for years has chosen to invest entirely in the Italian territory, from agricultural seed to resale, passing through cutting-edge industrial plants ». And the president, Ettore Prandini, adds: “It is a model supply chain thanks to which Italy is today the first tobacco producer in the European Union with over 1/4 of the total production, developed on 16,000 hectares”.

The supplies will be guaranteed by Italtab, the organization of tobacco producers. According to Massimiliano Giansanti, president of Confagricoltura: «We need long-term contracts. To do this, the tobacco industry and the entire tobacco chain, starting with agriculture, need to have certainties ». And Dino Scanavino, president of Italian Cia-Agricoltori, adds: “It is important to start a shared path, also with institutions, based on prudent choices regarding the taxation of products and on public and private investments for the ecological and digital transition” .
