Toyota GR 86: The funny “analog”

The new GR 86 is the latest element in the triptych of Toyota Gazoo Racing cars with an extremely sporty connotation: together with the GR Supra coupé and the GR Yaris, dedicated to the rally world, it makes up the range of cars of the Japanese brand that inherit the best of know-how in the racing field. The GR 86 is the most accessible of the range, both from an economic point of view and from that of driveability: extremely fun on the track, it is also suitable for road use without excessive inconvenience. Evolution of the previous GT 86, it maintains the classic front-engine and rear-wheel drive configuration but with several interesting innovations.

The new 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer (produced by Subaru) keeps the center of gravity low, allows for a significant increase in power and torque (234 hp and 250 Nm) and is capable of reaching quite high revs. The 6-speed manual gearbox is very precise and has been revised to provide smoother, fuller acceleration across the full range of engine use. The frame has been completely redesigned with the aim of increasing its rigidity, reducing its weight (12 kg less in total) and lowering its center of gravity so as to ensure even more exciting handling and responsiveness.

The brake control systems – ABS, Brake Assist, Traction Control, Vehicle Stability Control, Hillstart Assist – are always standard, along with the emergency braking warning system. The range of driver assistance systems is comprehensive and includes emergency braking with collision mitigation, lane departure warning, full-range adaptive cruise control and automatic high beam.

The stability control, which can be deactivated to fully enjoy the performance during laps on the track, is adjustable in five different modes to suit the rider’s preferences according to the driving conditions. The infotainment system focuses on the 8-inch central display and includes all the latest innovations such as Android Auto, Apple Carplay and the Dab radio.

The main instrument cluster in front of the driver uses a single-dial display: when switching to Track mode it changes views to show specific information chosen with the help of professional Toyota Gazoo Racing drivers.
