Toyota also joins the crowded fray for future dominance in the electric car market. To the Shanghai Auto Show a concept version of the Toyota bZ4X has appeared, which will be the first model of the series Toyota bZ, a new series of battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
The Japanese giant, number one in the world for car sales, has announced that it will introduce 15 BEV models, including seven new Toyota bZ BEV models by 2025. The company will increase the number of electric models to around 70 from the 55 currently offered.

Electric shock on two fronts

Toyota will move along two very distinct lines in order to compete both on the Mini EV market and on that of medium-high-end sedans where Tesla currently dominates and in which they are also positioning themselves Volkswagen, Renault and Chinese startups such as Xpeng.
The first director is aimed at creating the “Mobility for all”, with a focus su small electric cars, short-distance and ultra-compact with the definition of new business models such as reuse and recycling of batteries. The Toyota C + pod, launched in December 2020, is an example of this.
The new Toyota bZ series instead takes a “human-centered” approach and will attack markets such as China, the United States and Europe, where there is a significant demand for electric vehicles and where there is a large supply of electricity. renewable. “BZ” stands for “beyond zero” and incorporates the desire to provide customers with value that goes beyond just “zero emissions”.
The Toyota bZ series models will be built on the new electric platforms that can be used with multiple variations in terms of size and design. Because it is difficult for Toyota to prepare such a wide range of choices on its own, it is jointly developing the series with partners who have expertise in various fields.
The Toyota bZ4X, the concept presented today in Shanghai and which will be on the road in 2022, is a BEV SUV developed in partnership con Subaru and adopts the dedicated e-TNGA BEV platform which was jointly developed by the two companies.
