Turin, Fiorio restarts after the crisis: “Ready for the challenge”

TURIN. This time it should be the right restart. And it is to be sworn that all the Turinese, who carry a piece of the city’s eighteenth-century history, will hope so. After a difficult period, marked by the shutters lowered intermittently under the arcades of via Po, the rooms of the Caffè Fiorio will officially reopen on Monday. The yellow marble counter and the Art Nouveau entrance compass are still in place, but in the meantime the management has changed. The director of the new course is Vito Strazzella, one who knows about historical places, since over the years he has led the Caval d’brons and the San Carlo, just to name a few.

“It is a challenge, I expect the participation of our fellow citizens, who can get back into the habit of spending some time in this place”, says Strazzella, who in this new adventure will put his experience at the service of his daughter Noris, the whose company took over the coffee once loved by Cavour and D’Azeglio.

After the Christmas period the shutters of the Fiorio had been pulled down again, foreshadowing the worst to those who passed in front of its shop windows. “But now we leave again, our rooms will be open seven days a week, without foreseeing closing days – says Strazzella -. I am someone who never gives up, once the first weeks of running-in are over we will be there from 8 in the morning until midnight, but on weekends and on the day before holidays we will extend the hours until 1 “. With the hope that the historic center area will return to populate itself not only in the offices (emptied by smart working), but also with tourists attracted by the events to be held in the coming months, from Eurovision to the Book Fair and the Festival of Economics. .

The resumption of activities is not easy. Some maintenance will be needed considering the size of the internal rooms, which have a capacity of over two hundred people. But in these days the selection of personnel is also being completed, completely renewed compared to the past, which at full capacity should count on about fifteen people. With the aim, among many others, of bringing the Turinese back to consume espresso coffee every morning, a moment that in recent years marked by Covid and restrictions has been somewhat lost. “We will follow the tradition, but we will also deepen the preparation of the aperitif, which continues to be a consolidated habit for many people – says Strazzella – I will also continue the catering activities, as well as I intend to continue the relationship with the tourist guides, because Fiorio must be an obligatory stop among the historical places, for those who want to get to know our city ».

In short, the ambition is to make this place return to the center of the thoughts and habits of the Turinese. A bit like when at the beginning of the nineteenth century, according to legend, King Carlo Alberto asked in the morning “What do you say at Caffè Fiorio?”, At the time the favorite haunt of intellectuals, aristocrats and diplomats. «I would like to bring this place back to the best times of the management of Luigi Quarello, who from the Eighties and until a few years ago gave a lot for this place». –
