WeRoad, the travel startup for young people focuses on England. “In Italy there is no clarity, other than holiday cunning”

MILANO – Canaries, Madeira, Iceland, Malta. All destinations that on the WeRoad website are classified as “safe”, because those who leave take a swab before getting on the plane and returning home. “No holiday crafty”, because “no one has done anything illegal. Indeed, you are certainly more controlled than those who filled the parks on Easter Monday”. Talking are Fabio Bin and Erika De Santi, founder of the community of young travelers launched four years ago within One Day, the “business builder” who gave birth among other ScuolaZoo and other companies (marketing and communication) that speak above all to the new generations.

After the freezing due to Covid, interrupted only in the summer with the destinations in the Mediterranean basin, from February WeRoad has started to run some of its tourists again. A tour operator Sui generis, which takes care of the complete package but stands out because it speaks directly to its customers, without the mediation of agencies, communicates in a smart way, creates a real community of travelers. In the last pre-pandemic year it had a turnover of about 10 million euros, in recent months it has managed to tighten its belt by cutting costs, using the cig and reinventing itself as a service provider (especially marketing, customer care and communication ) for companies whose business has continued to thrive.

Meanwhile, he worked on the relaunch. In his past he had raised a first loan from the One Day group of 1 million, then a second from family office of 2 million; now he is organizing the third round. It will also serve to expand the international presence: after Spain, the assault on the UK market has begun. “An unexpected opportunity – explain the founders – because a market vacuum was created with the failure of Flash Pack, a start-up similar to us”. In the future, also France and the rest of the English-speaking market.

WeRoad’s model is to make small groups of people of the same age travel long-haul (they had left for 25-35 year-olds, then they also expanded to over-sized people, given the requests). A few hundred tourists in 2017, a few months after the launch, have come to make ten thousand people go around the world. WeRoad revolves a lot around the concept of community, both because it involves and listens to the desire of travelers on its social platforms, and because of the role it entrusts to travel coordinators. The latter are 450 collaborators recruited and trained in a bootcamp, who are then always ‘hooked’ to the network with dedicated activities. “Most of our costs are linked to the management of the coordinators, they are a community in which we invest a lot”, explain the founders.

Last summer they boosted their Italian destinations, over 50, and now they hope to make a virtue of necessity. The Italian offer is well suited to the new British public: alongside the typical flows of WeRoad, which were intercontinental travel from Italy, the local destinations for the Queen’s tourists. “The clarity on the restart that the Johnson government has managed to give, with certain stages towards the summer, gives us hope”, they say.

“This is precisely what has been lacking in Italy so far, as demonstrated by the episode of the order on quarantines by Minister Speranza”. Already, a measure born out of concerns related to possible uncontrolled departures, while hotels in Italy remained closed. “But it was a sterile act, dictated precisely by those controversies. In reality, for some time now people could leave: in the folds of the Dpcm it was allowed to travel for tourism, even to reach airports in the red zone. Some foreign countries have always welcomed travelers , respecting some rules and protocols. So we have complied with those provisions and already in February we have restarted some flows “.

Given that “vaccines are obviously the priority to restart”, positioning on the aperturist front was a debated choice: “Even among our followers there were polarized positions between those who insisted on the need to stay at home and those who wanted a gradual return to We have taken a strong position, with courage but responsibility: the new normal is given by pads, masks and safety protocols “, say the founders.
