With Trinacria bike wagon a sustainable future for the Sicilian cart

by admin

Combining tradition and innovation to recover and re-propose the Sicilian cart, symbol of the island, in the context of sustainable mobility. This, in a nutshell, is the basic idea of Trinacria bike wagon, the project carried out by Lisca Bianca, a non-profit organization from Palermo, in collaboration with Sguardi Urbani, Tan Panormi, Centro Studi Opera Don Calabria and Yam srl, and supported by the Con Foundation the South through the Handicraft Call, promoted in collaboration with the Association – Observatory of Art Professions of Florence. From today to Sunday the Trin-Hackaton will be held in Scalo 5 B, Lisca Bianca’s shared workshop at the former Mediterranean Fair: teams of creatives and designers will compete in a competition of ideas and creativity to give the cart a new life sustainable.

«The aim of the Artigianato call is to recover the typical artisan knowledge of the South that is literally on the verge of extinction, enhancing them in a contemporary key with interventions capable of triggering strong processes of social innovation. A complex operation that is not easy to implement – says Carlo Borgomeo, president of the Foundation with the South -. The project to enhance the ancient art of the Sicilian cart, revisited and integrated with new technologies, however, shows that it is a viable path if there is valid experimentation. It is not the form of craftsmanship that is ancient and outdated, if anything, tradition is an added value, but it is the process of innovation that underlies its enhancement that must be bold, starting from the social and participation. In this way, the other objectives can also be achieved, and be attractive to businesses and young people ».

The Sicilian cart is the starting point for all the teams that will participate in the challenge launched within the Trinacria Bike Wagon project, with a very specific goal: to propose a functional reinterpretation of the cart in a new finished product (bicycle trailer, rickshaw for the transport of tourists, means for the distribution of street food, etc.), keeping intact the aesthetic standards, the decorative aspects, with the possibility of exploiting the latest generation of design and construction techniques (CAD modeling, reverse engineering, 3D printing) and materials other than traditional wood. «We chose the hackaton formula – explains Monica Guizzardi, Project Manager of the event – borrowing it from the competitions usually linked to programmers, software and digital. We liked the concept of hackers, in the sense of those who steal and break up a seemingly closed and inaccessible code, combined with that of marathon, an intense full-immersion with a well-defined purpose: to arrive at the end of the 3 days with ideas, possibly feasible and concrete, to be compared with the other participants “.
