Last week, the 2021 German Film Festival began its first work at the Broadway Film Center in Beijing. This year’s film exhibition is sponsored by the German Film Association and co-organized by the German Cultural Center Beijing·Goethe Institute (China) and Broadway Studios. The 2021 German Film Festival will kick off with “Custom Boyfriend” (“I Am Your Human”) directed by Maria Schrader. The heroine of the film, Marlen Eggert, is one of the most promising and talented actors in the German film industry. She won the Silver Bear Award for Best Leading Role at the Berlin Film Festival for her “Custom Boyfriend”. She expressed her greetings to the audience through the video. The hero of the film is “Dan Dan Long” Dan Stevens (“Beauty and the Beast”).
This year’s new film exhibition selection advisory team consists of three people, they are: China Film Art Research Center (China Film Archive) senior researcher Li Xun, director Huang Ji (representative work “Stupid Bird”), and the vertical category of movies Media guide editorial department.
The consultant team selected 6 excellent films from many German films this year to be screened at the Broadway Film Center in Beijing. The special screening units have already met the audience at the German Cultural Center in Beijing·Goethe-Institut (China) and the French Cultural Center in Beijing. The Broadway screenings include “Curveball” which won a bronze award for best feature film at the German Film Awards, “Noise Symphony” which won the best sound effects, and “Home” which was nominated for best photography. “Nicole” starring Sara Fazirat won the best actress at the German Max-Ophels Film Festival, which supports newcomers in the film industry. In addition, the documentary “Endless Nuclear Nightmare”, which pays attention to nuclear energy pollution, is also included in this screening for movie fans.
This year’s German Film Festival is very honored to have Mr. Jia Zhangke and Ms. Zhao Tao as China‘s publicity ambassadors. Jia Zhangke’s feature film debut “Xiao Wu” won the Berlin Film Festival Youth Forum Award, and “The Good Man in Three Gorges” won the Golden Lion Award for Best Picture at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival. In 2010, Jia Zhangke won the Golden Leopard Award at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland. In 2013, he won the Best Screenplay Award at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival. In 2015, he won the “Golden Carriage Award” for lifetime achievement in the director’s biweekly unit of the Cannes International Film Festival.
Zhao Tao won the Best Actress Award at the 56th Italian Film David Award (Italian Film Awards) for the Italian film “I Am Li” in 2012, becoming the first Asian actress in history to receive this honor. In 2020, he was invited to become a member of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and was qualified as a judge for the Academy Awards. In the same year, he was selected as the 25 greatest actors of the 21st century by the New York Times of the United States, ranked eighth, and was the only Chinese actor selected.
Since 2013, the German Film Festival has been held every year, and this year is the ninth year.
