PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A police officer and two wanted members of the Pakistani Taliban were killed in an intense gunfight that began when police raided a militant shelter in the country’s northwest early Tuesday, a local police official said. .

Two other police officers were injured in the shootout on Tuesday morning in Mardan, a town in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Local official Hidayat Ullah identified the deceased police officer as Superintendent Ijaz Khan, who was leading the raid.

Police were searching for the two Taliban members killed for their alleged involvement in more than 20 attacks against security forces, and a financial reward had been offered for any information leading to their capture.

The Pakistani Taliban, which often attacks security forces in the northwest of the country, on the border with Afghanistan, did not immediately comment.

The group, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP, is a separate militia but allied to the Afghan Taliban, which took control of Afghanistan in August 2021 as US and NATO troops were leaving the country.
