The reporter learned from the Beijing Peking Opera Theater that the new Peking Opera “Five Swordsmen” will meet with a large audience at the Chang’an Grand Theater in Beijing in mid-December.
The newly edited Peking Opera “Five Swordsmen” was launched in early 2019 and was included in the creation plan in July. The first draft will be completed in 2020. In 2021, it will be officially selected as the annual key creative project of Beijing Peking Opera Theater. The play mainly revolves around the life deeds of Beijing historical celebrities “Big Sword King Five”. It describes the story of the “Big Sword King Fifth” loyal to the liver and loyalty, saving the nation, and eventually becoming a generation of heroes in the historical period of the “Hundred Days Reform” in the late Qing Dynasty.
The creative team of the new Peking Opera “The King of Swordsman Fifth” brought together screenwriters Jiang Chaogao, Gao Qinglong, Sun Guoyi, director Zhang Feng, composer and vocal designer Zhu Shaoyu, composer and orchestrator Wang Tianci, and deputy director Nian Jinpeng, etc., and specially invited Yang Shaochun, Zhang Siquan, Lang Shichang, Li Hongyan served as art director. The play is starred by outstanding young performers of the Beijing Peking Opera Theater such as Zhan Lei, Zhang Kai, Yu Shuai, Cao Yangyang, Wang Yanli, and Li Mixin. The outstanding young performer of Beijing Peking Opera Theater Ma Shuai serves as drummer and Wang Changlin serves as luthier.

Zhang Feng stated that by telling the heroic deeds of the “Big Sword King Fifth”, a brave and loyal martyr who served the country and the people, it was necessary to create a high level of art of the Beijing Peking Opera Theater, capable of fully displaying and exerting the level of theater martial arts. The quality of Peking Opera and martial arts dramas also draws on the past and presents the present, and pays tribute to the contemporary heroes in all walks of life who are working hard for the people’s happy life in all walks of life.
Zhu Shaoyu said that the composition and singing design of the play will adhere to the concept of “conservation and innovation”, strengthen the musicality, and make it a “good-looking, nice-sounding, and exemplary martial arts work”.
Zhan Lei, an outstanding young actor of the Beijing Peking Opera Theatre, who starred in the newly edited Peking Opera “Five of the Great Swords”, visited the Yuanshun Escort Bureau site and the former residence of Wang Wu for the first time after receiving the task of creating and rehearsing, and met Wang Wu in the West Banbi Street. In his neighbourhood, the exchanges with witnesses made him a deeper understanding and understanding of the characters.
Liu Tong, Dean of the Beijing Peking Opera Theatre, said that there is a lack of martial arts in the newly created repertoires on the Peking Opera stage.
