At least 29 people have died and 61 have been affected by drinking adulterated cider in Russia, local authorities said today. “The total number of victims of surrogate alcohol poisoning in the Russian regions amounts to 90 people,” of whom 29 died, he said.
the Ministry of Health, quoted by the Russian press agencies.
On Monday, the Russian authorities had reported a balance of at least 16 deaths and several dozen injured. As reported by the AFP news agency, four people are in a “state
extremely serious” and 30, in “serious condition”. According to local media, the victims consumed an alcohol called “Mister Cider” that contained methanol, a highly toxic product. This drink was sold in some alcohol outlets.
For this reason, the Russian authorities opened an investigation and ordered the confiscation of the bottles of contaminated alcohol. Deaths from adulterated alcohol are frequent in Russia, where the prices of liquor sold in large stores are prohibitive for millions of impoverished Russians, especially in rural areas, where the standard of living is very low, AFP added.
In October 2021, 35 people died of alcohol poisoning in two different incidents in Russia.
