ROMA – In 2033 Audi will stop the production of endothermic motor vehicles and from 2026, all new models will be equipped with full-electric propulsion ”. The strategy announced by the CEO of Audi AG Markus Duesmann at the climate conference held in Berlin, therefore certifies the desire to accelerate the transition to electric mobility which, according to the numbers provided by several car manufacturers, should already materialize during this decade.
It is therefore legitimate to speak of revolution even if everything starts from above instead of from the people and at the moment, the proposed theorem can only be pursued by the wealthiest segment of the wealthiest Western countries. The first challenge therefore – in addition to finding raw materials in a truly sustainable way and achieving net zero carbon in the production phases – is therefore to lower the costs of EV vehicles to give access to the technology. Another fundamental issue in the perspective of safeguarding the climate lies in the use of exclusively renewable energies and at the same time, a widespread network of fast charge columns is necessary, of which at the moment there is only a partial trace. As a promoter of a change supported by the avant-garde, Audi is involved in both areas through collaboration with energy providers and with pilot projects aiming at creating modular charging hubs.
During the climate conference, the brand with the four rings also identified 2050 as the deadline for achieving a carbon neutral balance. The goal would crown a broader project focused on green dynamics, as told in Berlin by the CEO Duesmann: “We are inclined to innovation and we want to offer individual solutions for sustainable and zero-emission mobility. The timing for the actual shutdown of endothermic engines will be decided by customers and legislators. Our company expects the demand in China to continue to rise and therefore, production could continue beyond the date, but limited to the Asian country. We are currently expanding the Bev range and already this year, we have introduced more electric cars to the market than traditional ones. By 2025 the brand will be able to count on 20 full-electric models and through this roadmap, we are laying the foundations for a clear and decisive transition to the new era. We are sending a signal: Audi is ready ”.
