On the evening of Friday, June 10, after a long illness, the art historian Augusta Monferini died in her Roman home, born in Ancona on August 16, 1934, daughter of the professor of Philosophy Enzo Monferini and wife of the art historian. Maurizio Calvesi, who passed away in 2020.

Her scientific activity is remembered for her important studies on medieval art, on Piranesi and, above all, her great contribution to the history of contemporary art, both as the author of fundamental publications and as Superintendent of the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art. From Rome.

Monferini has dedicated all his energies to this museum, directed for more than ten years, with a fundamental impulse to renew and expand his collections, which thanks to his work have been enriched with masterpieces by Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh and donations from protagonists of twentieth century Italian art such as Giacomo Balla, Giorgio de Chirico, Lucio Fontana, Renato Guttuso, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Pietro Consagra, Umberto Mastroianni, Giulio Turcato, Fabrizio Clerici and many others.

The acquisitions of these important groups of works were then joined by the creation of large exhibitions at the museum headquarters in Rome and abroad, strengthening the prestige of the gallery at an international level, with exhibitions such as those dedicated, for example, to Turcato, to Guttuso, de Chirico, Pistoletto, Paolini, de Pisis, Sironi, Carrà, Mauri.

In the last twenty years of her life Augusta Monferini, together with her husband, the art historian Maurizio Calvesi, was then editor and coordinator of the scientific journal Storia dell’Arte, saving it from its closure, engaging its own capital in the project and making it become a a real research laboratory, a breeding ground where a huge number of art historians and historians of the last generations have been trained who now work in Italian and foreign museums, superintendencies and universities.

Augusta Monferini’s funeral will be held on Monday 13 June at 12 in the Roman basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere.
