Auto, 2022 is upon us: here are the EU safety rules in force since July

by admin

Let’s ask ourselves a question: do we know which rules we will have to respect, what is foreseen in the automotive future? Maybe it is time to freshen up, see what we will encounter.

Two years ago, the European Union laid out the guidelines for a road safety strategy with important innovations, see new safety assistants and driving aids to be implemented every two years.

The regulation will be mandatory in all European countries from 6 July 2022. It is the date on which all vehicles registered for the first time must have a series of systems that will help reduce road fatalities and further protect the lives of occupants. In this phase “A” – of the four planned – cars and light commercial vehicles will have to have three advanced driving assistants: the intelligent speed assistant, the lane change warning and the tire pressure monitoring system. But even trucks and buses will not be exempt: they will have to have emergency braking systems capable of detecting a possible frontal collision with a stationary or moving vehicle, and brake the vehicle.

Instead, the second batch of measures, for all new vehicles, will come into effect two years later, on 6 July 2024. The package will include two other aids, the lane maintenance assistant with emergency stop and the event recorder, the famous ‘Black Box’. In addition, trucks and buses will take a major step forward with standard tire monitoring – including trailers with a maximum authorized mass of more than 3.5 tonnes – and also with advanced emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.

Again: the measures classified as “C” will enter into force on 7 July 2026. These will be technologies that the industry is still carrying out: there are already several models that have advanced emergency braking, but a more function will also be added. evolved, able to recognize not only the driver’s tiredness and drowsiness, but also distractions.

Finally, the fourth safety measure, mandatory from 7 January 2029. It will concern the existing types of trucks and buses, which must have the black box that will record everything that happens on board, when a road accident occurs. These models will also feature new front and side visibility, which will reduce blind spots.

Here, this is the scenario. But the ongoing transition will still lead to new developments, and perhaps surprises.
