Like the previous movie, in “Bed Rabbit 2: Escape Project”, the actors often need to perform in the same frame with animal characters such as Pete Rabbit and his sisters. But these small co-stars are all produced by animation, and the actors can only use their imagination in interaction. Fortunately, director Will Gluck has a valuable tool that makes it easier for actors to perform performances.
Güller has been updating his Surface products in recent years. Before the epidemic, he completed the filming of “Bidder Rabbit 2” in Australia. “Bidder Rabbit 2” was previously postponed due to the epidemic, and now it has been in theaters. Guller said, “The beauty of Surface Book 2 is that it can separate the screen. When on set, I can show the actors what characters they are interacting with. Surface Book 2 breaks the barriers of traditional studios. I no longer have to carry my laptop. A computer, as long as you hold a tablet, you can show the actors who they are performing in the same frame. Then, we can display the screen that the actors are watching on a device similar to a copying machine. The most important thing for me is the Surface Book 2 Allows me to separate the screen, sketch on the screen and show it directly to the actors. Previously, this work was done on other devices, but these devices could not help me with other tasks. In contrast, the Surface Book has A full-featured laptop is in my heart.”
Surface is not only an efficient tool for Güller when he is working on the set, but also his right-hand man in the film creation process. Gull usually uses Surface Book and Surface Studio to write scripts. During the filming, he collaborated with Animal Logic Studios in Australia to produce visual effects in the film. Every other week and weekend, Güller will fly back to Los Angeles. During the long flight, he will use Surface Book 2 to edit movies and review the visual effects of the movie screens. During the period, he will also use the Windows ink function to take notes for the reference of the art team.
After returning to Los Angeles, Güller worked remotely with editors in Sydney through Surface Studio to edit the entire movie. During this process, Güller also held several video conferences with the Sydney team to discuss the editing content.
Every day, he communicates with colleagues in foreign countries through the optical fiber network. In his opinion, another change is the rapid network that makes remote collaboration possible and easy and convenient.
“A major breakthrough in the past few years has been the rapid development of optical fiber networks. Today’s network connections have basically no delay, almost reaching the real-time level.” Güler said.
It is also worth mentioning that the super-large screen size and 4K high-definition display of Surface Studio also provided great help to Güler’s work.
“The color picture I saw on Surface Studio was exactly the same as what I saw in the editing room. This also brought a huge change to the entire project, which is very different from other products. Previously edited on other screens. There will be a color difference between the picture you see and the actual video picture, but the color rendering you see on Surface Studio is exactly the same.”
Gull became famous for directing “Anne: Pocahontas” and “Bed Rabbit”. He said that since the epidemic, he has received many calls asking how his team can successfully complete a feature film remotely.
When he goes out or travels across oceans and is not with team members, he can still continue to work. He said, “Before the epidemic, everyone would be worried about this. Fortunately, we have innovative technology. I am very used to this working model, and I have completed two movies in this way. I have mastered some working modes that are being explored by most people now.”
Every employee in the Gühler company has a Surface Studio generation and a Surface Book 2 laptop running Office 365 on their desk. And his home is also full of Surface products (including Surface Book 2 and Surface Book 3 laptops, Surface Studio and Surface Headphones). His family is still using Surface Go to control the Crestron smart house and home audio-visual system. Now, his children are also big fans of Surface.
“My children were not Surface users before, but now they have undergone a huge change. They are all using Surface Studio at home to do things. My eldest daughter has a clothing brand, and she will design clothes on Surface Studio.” Guler said, “My other kid loves design and drawing, and she has been using Surface Studio. She likes to put the screen at the right angle and use the stylus, so that there is a lot of creative space.”
Today, the post-epidemic era is still evolving, and Güller knows that this is a completely different world compared to a year ago.
“For people like me who make theater-line movies, this is a huge change. Now we all realize that movies will be played on streaming media, and movie theaters will not disappear. Now we can work remotely. In fact, this This mode of work existed before the epidemic, and the epidemic only accelerated its progress.”
