According to foreign media reports,Following the sale of an NFT for $69 million in March, Beeple made the next major move in the field of digital art: he will launch an NFT platform that sells “iconic” moments in a timely manner. It is reported that this platform is called Wenew, which was created by Beeple and some long-term partners.

They also invited Ryan Schreiber, the founder of Pitchfork, to serve as editor-in-chief of Wenew. Schreiber will help plan moments for sale on the platform, including career highlights for athletes and artists.

Schreiber said in an interview with The Verge: “We definitely want to immortalize these moments of human achievement.”

Wenew’s first NFT series recorded Andy Murray’s journey to win Wimbledon in 2013. One can buy Murray’s exciting runner-up speech in 2012, some of Murray’s best shots in 2013, and his final winning speech. Or more specifically, a limited edition digital file can be purchased to represent these moments.

NFT prices range from US$49 to US$4,999, and some of the more expensive ones will come with authentic souvenirs-signed posters, tickets for the 2022 Wimbledon Winter Olympics, trophy replicas or digital displays. In a very high-end segment, Wenew will auction an NFT to commemorate Murray’s winning score, and buyers will also have 30 minutes to play tennis with him.

Wenew co-founder Michael Figge told The Verge: “A lot of things in the NFT world now seem to be stealing money, but we want to put storytelling first.”

Now, NFT faces several eternal questions–the simplest one is, “Why?”–but Wenew is at least trying to answer this question: “What are you actually buying?” Some real things were acquired in the purchase, except for the nominal ostentation rights that usually accompany NFT purchases.

This format is similar to the NBA’s Top Shot platform, which turns game highlights into virtual trading cards. So far, they have brought great success to the NBA, with more than $500 million in sales in the first six months alone.

Wenew wants to expand this idea by tracing back time and crossing different disciplines. The company also plans to enter the music field, which is one of the reasons Schreiber joined. His job is to find mainstream athletes and artists and build a story arc around them, determining where NFTs can be sold in the process. NFT sales will be accompanied by long reports by reporters to explore the importance of these events.

Another unresolved question is how many musicians Wenew can invite. NFT has been controversial in the music field — “I don’t want people to bet on me like horse betting,” Zola Jesus told Pitchfork last month — and has been widely criticized by artists for its energy use and impact on the climate. Schreiber sees them as a way to “redefine” the relationship between artists and their patrons.

Schreiber said: “Frankly, this gives them the potential to earn the income they deserve through their work.” Figge said that the platform will include carbon offset fees, which will exceed the NFT’s environmental transaction costs.
