One million euros for the restoration of the Parish Church of Arezzo. The donation comes from Patrizio Bertelli, president of the Prada Group. The announcement was made by the bishop of Arezzo Cortona Sansepolcro, Andrea Migliavacca who together with the parish priest of the Pieve, Don Alvaro Bardelli thanked Bertelli. The funds will be used for «the important and urgent restoration and maintenance works of a building (the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta) as beautiful as it is fragile, to which all the people of Arezzo are deeply attached»

The connection with Arezzo and the activities saved from closure

Patrizio Bertelli, husband of Miuccia Prada, was born in Arezzo in 1946 and continues to have a very strong bond with the city. A bond that has led him in recent years to take over numerous local businesses in severe crisis: the La Buca di San Francesco restaurant, purchased in 2022 and reopened in April 2023 on the occasion of the entrepreneur’s birthday; the Caffè dei Costanti, where in 1997 Roberto Benigni filmed a scene from “Life is Beautiful”, acquired at auction at the beginning of 2023 – after a year and a half of closure – through Immobiliare Peschiera for 1.6 million euros; the historic La Capannaccia restaurant in Campriano, forced to close at the end of 2022 and purchased by Bertelli for 600 thousand euros in December of the following year.

The restoration in synergy with the Ministry of Culture

Now the “saving” of the Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the symbols of Arezzo: the urban baptismal church dates back to between the 5th and 6th centuries, but the Romanesque church dates back to the 12th century. Although it was renovated in the 1970s, the external walls of the parish church are in a state of decay and last year part of a column of the main facade collapsed. «The need to proceed quickly with important conservative interventions on the extraordinary monument of the Pieve di Santa Maria has favored the activation of fundamental synergies between the Diocese of Arezzo-Cortona-Sansepolcro, the Ministry of Culture and a private entrepreneur – explained the superintendent Gabriele Nannetti -. Precisely in these last few weeks we are proceeding with the verification and validation of the executive project drawn up for the architectural and structural parts”. The ministry had already allocated one million one hundred thousand euros for the restoration.
