Inflation in the City of Buenos Aires (CABA) climbed to 14.1% during February and accumulated an increase of 264.5% in the last 12 months, reported the Buenos Aires Government.

In the second month of the year, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) measured by the General Directorate of Statistics and Censuses of Buenos Aires reflected a drop of more than seven percentage points over the January record (when it had reached 21.7%). Thus, in the first two months of 2024, inflation reached 38.9% in the country’s capital.

In February, Food and non-alcoholic beverages, which is the item with the greatest weight within the CPI, had an increase of 14.7%slightly above the general index: this category represented 3.05 percentage points of the 14.1% inflation for the month.

In addition, food in the City of Buenos Aires increased by 43% in the first two months and a 329.3% year-on-year, in this case, well above inflation.

According to the Buenos Aires Government, insurance and financial services were the item that became most expensive in February, with 30%; In the two-month period, it accumulates 61.4%.

For its part, Health increased 21.1% in February, 57.8% in the first two months and 269.5% year-on-year. Transportation registered an increase of 21% in the second month of the year, driven by the adjustment in fuel and urban bus tickets.

“The falls in air ticket prices contributed to slowing the division’s rise,” the official report explained. In this area, the accumulated for the two-month period was 61.8% and for the last 12 months, 315.1%.

Other items that boosted inflation in February were alcoholic beverages and tobacco (21.3% in the month and 267.1% year-on-year) and information and communication (19.4% in February and 255% year-on-year).

The report also pointed out that goods rose 13.3% in February and 313.7% year-on-year, while services rose 14.8% in the month and 230.2% year-on-year.
