Bulgari, the news of Watches & Wonders between ultraslim and jewel-watches

by admin

Albeit digitally, what starts today will be the first Geneva Watches and Wonders for many brands. Among these Bulgarians, whose CEO Jean-Christophe Babin is preparing to face this week after having closed the first quarter of 2021 in a satisfactory way. Without being able to go into specifics before the official publication of the data, he underlines: «We are above 2019 in those countries where the incidence of tourism is not strong and slightly below in countries such as France and Italy. In Italy the local team has done an exceptional job to increase the domestic clientele which has increased by 25%, even if three months cannot be enough to compensate for the huge mass of travel retail that has disappeared which for us, as for all luxury brands, it is the most important part ».

After participating in the Lvmh Watch Days last January, Babin heralds a second edition of the Geneva Watch Days (of which Bulgari was a founding member) for the second part of the year. But after years of presence at Baselworld today there is a historic debut at Watches and Wonders in Geneva.

The news, from ultra slim to unique pieces

Here Bulgari’s focus is on men’s watchmaking, which is worth 25% in this sector of the brand and is – explains the CEO – «growing in the high-end segment and in complications, a phenomenon that we also see in jewelery. At Watches and Wonders in Geneva we are launching the Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar, a model whose total thickness of 5.80 mm allows us to set the seventh record among the ultra-slim. Despite being a great complication, it is designed to be worn every day ».

Among the new features of the Octo Finissimo Chronograph, a 160-piece Octo Finissimo Tadao Ando made with the famous Japanese architect. For the female wrist there are the Serpenti Misteriosi Cleopatra, a spectacular watch / bracelet with precious stones (one-off), two Diva’s Dream Divissima and two Allegra.

“Fairs have changed forever”

Staying on the theme of trade fairs and related economic commitment, the real test with Watches and Wonders for the brand will take place in 2022: «For this year, being all digital, the costs will be similar to those of the Geneva Watch Days. For the future, we will certainly never spend more money like those in Basel or what we could have spent at Sihh (the name of the previous version of Watches and Wonders, ed). In addition to this, we will no longer participate in salons with a format the same as in the past ». The reasons? «Today dealers need a product, understand its potential and sell it. They are not interested in seeing how beautiful your booth is. If the next Watches and Wonders will be inspired by the idea of the Geneva Watch Days, a mix of physical and digital with the participation of the 38 most prestigious brands (even if some are missing), then with a complete representation of luxury brands , welcome. If, on the other hand, it will be a “Baselworld refresh” with a pinch of digital and diversions, but always at very high costs and with little room for decision for us brands, it will not satisfy me. We have entered a new world, not only for trade fairs, but for many aspects of the business that post-covid cannot cancel ».
