Campervans and caravans, the reasons for the boom

by admin

ROME – Despite the restrictions due to the Sars-CoV-2 pandemic, the caravan and camper sector continues to gain ground. A success that affects both the production and the number of users of this vehicle which allows greater freedom of movement and a closer contact with nature. The sector’s numbers confirm this trend which has been going on for several years now. In this sense, just think that last year the increase in registrations in Europe was double-digit with almost 250,000 new vehicles registered, including campers and caravans. Germany confirmed itself as the leading market in the Old Continent and Italian companies export over 80% of their production (more than 50% of production is destined for the German market).

“The use of the camper and caravan to enjoy one’s free time is not a passing trend – explains Ludovica Sanpaolesi de Falena, general manager of the Caravan and Camper Producers Association (Apc) – We can safely say that this is a megatrend that has imposed throughout Europe and is beginning to spread widely in Italy as well. The data tells us: from 2015 to today, registrations of European motorhomes and caravans have increased by more than 22%. All the indicators say that the growth of the sector will continue. Italian companies have hired almost 1,000 people directly in the last few months. Several companies are building new factories or expanding existing factories. The success of the camper is destined to last because the camper interprets the change in society and offers optimal solutions to people’s new needs. Undoubtedly, the pandemic has made the camper perceived as the safest way to travel: you have your own bathroom, your own kitchen, you travel only with loved ones. This has led to a significant increase in demand. But the growth trend was already present before the pandemic. Manufacturing companies have had to come up with safe ways to increase production. And doing it in time for Covid with all the necessary anti-virus measures was a major challenge. Won “.

In short, despite the six weeks of forced shutdown of the factories due to Covid-19, Italian producers managed to increase 2020 production by 1.1% compared to the previous year, achieving a turnover of over 800 million euros and churning out more of 20,000 campers and the first months of 2021, according to APC, indicate that the increase in production will be much greater for the current year. But what are the reasons that have led to the increase in demand in the caravan and camper sector?

“The reasons are different and have a cultural matrix – adds Sanpaolesi – A first reason lies in the desire for freedom and independence that only the use of the camper can allow: no reservations, you leave when you want, you change route and destination as you wish. The desire to be close to nature is also a strong motivation, and then the flexibility that the camper offers is priceless: with the camper you can also do smart working while you are in a forest and – maybe – the next day on a beach or in a splendid village. Campervans are now equipped with all comforts, so they are very comfortable. In addition, they give the feeling of freedom. Among the reasons for the success of the camper there is also the increasingly felt tendency to know and live new experiences, even in proximity, in a context of slow-travel or sweet tourism. And, again, they allow you to always carry your four-legged friend with you. Finally, many sportsmen use it to move around during training and competitions. In summary, the success of the camper is due to a set of factors, social, technological and cultural, which embody the great change we are experiencing. It is a means that accompanies us towards the society of the future ”.
