Cannes, the best of cinema: Italy tries with Sorrentino

PARIS – Paolo Sorrentino with The great beauty, Steven Soderbergh con Behind the candelabra and Nicolas Winding Refn with Only gods forgive are among the great authors of world cinema competing for the Cannes Palme d’Or 2013. While Valeria Golino, director of Miele, was selected for the “Un certain regard” section. The confirmation comes from the official presentation of the Festival program, now in its sixty-sixth edition, which will take place in the town of the Côte d’Azur between 15 and 26 May. Among the other films in competition, Inside Llewyn Davis by Ethan and Joel Coen, Jimmy P. by Arnaud Desplechin, As I Lay Dying by James Franco, Young and beautiful by Francois Ozon, Nebraska di Alexander Payne, The Venus in Furs by Roman Polanski. Italy is also represented in some way by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, who directs and interprets the French film A castle in Italy, which also has Filippo Timi among the protagonists. The opening film of the event will be He great gatsby by Baz Luhrmann, while The Bling Ring by Sofia Coppola will inaugurate “Un certain Regard”.

Conceived and written by Sorrentino himself with Umberto Contarello, the film is set and entirely shot in Rome. The film, as stated in the official note released by the press office, “tells the story of high society ladies, upstart politicians, high profile criminals, journalists, actors, fallen nobles, high prelates, artists and true intellectuals or presumed that weave threads of inconsistent relationships, engulfed in a desperate Babylon that is stirring in the ancient palaces, the endless villas, the most beautiful terraces in the city “. The protagonist is a writer and journalist, Jep Gambardella, played by Toni Servillo.

Miele della Golino, starring Jasmine Trinca, is instead a story that revolves around the theme of the end of life. Produced by Riccardo Scamarcio and Viola Prestieri (a Buena Onda production with Rai Cinema in co-production with Les Films des Tournelles and Citè Films) it will be released in Italian cinemas on May 1st distributed by Bim. “I am happy and content – commented the director – I am also proud to be in the same festival with other Italian films made by great friends who are also great artists”.

On the Croisette there will also be another Italian actress, Nicoletta Braschi, sworn for the Cinefondation that awards the prizes to short films. And among the Special Screenings, we find Stop the Pounding Heart by Roberto Minervini, already at the Horizons of Venice 2012 with Low Tide.
