ROME – Renting a car abroad, for holidays or for work, can be an excellent solution to move freely without being bound by the timetables of public transport services, especially in the cities. But how much does it actually cost to rent a vehicle? The research carried out by Uswitch.com/car-insurance contains all the data to evaluate if and when it is convenient to proceed with the rental. However, the reference is to an economy class vehicle, without the addition of specific services (such as Kasko insurance or other) which can strongly affect the final rental price.

Thus, it emerges that with about 30 euros a day, Moscow is the European capital substantially cheaper to rent a car, even if it is true that Brussels, a very busy city with various limitations, should be considered – excluding these limits – at the first. place, with a cost of only 29.7 euros per day.

Next in the ranking of the cheapest cities is Prague, whose daily rental of a vehicle costs 33 euros. Followed by Warsaw (34 euros) and Paris (34.7 euros). Kiev stands out slightly from this first part of the ranking with a daily price of 36 euros. Immediately after there are Madrid (37 euros), Tirana (38 euros) and Bratislava (38.5 euros). Among the top ten cheapest, it ranks – but in last place – Tallinn, with a daily cost of 40 euros.

On the other side of the ranking, that of the most expensive cities, Ljubljana stands out, with a cost of 94 euros per day. Followed by Vienna (81 euros), Copenhagen (75 euros), Helsinki (68 euros) and Bern (65 euros).

But what do you need to rent a vehicle abroad, apart from a credit card to pay the costs? First of all, the driving license, but it must be carefully checked whether in the country where we intend to rent the car an international license is required, which must be requested at least 15 days in advance. Furthermore, it should be carefully checked whether certain insurance policies are included in the rental cost (first of all that of civil liability). All other accessory components (Kasko insurance, insurance for the driver and family members transported, theft and fire of the vehicle) must be well controlled to avoid surprises, such as the presence of deductibles or clauses that invalidate their effectiveness.

It would also be a good idea to check the consumer’s rights, both specifically in the rental agreement and in those in force in the country where we are going to rent the car. In general, the consumer’s right includes the right to have a fair contract and access to alternative dispute resolution in the event of a disagreement with the rental company, the right to unique and clear information at all times. In any case, it is best to pay the contract with a credit card and carefully check if there are any additional costs. Good practice is also to take photographs of the hired vehicle, in order to be able to document any pre-existing damage.

Research from Uswitch.com/car-insurance analyzed 3,951 car rental offers in capital cities across Europe. The resulting dataset was aggregated by city and the weekly average total price and daily average price were calculated. The data was collected on 03/08/2021
