ROME – Car thefts have halved. According to the data collected by segugio.it – a company specializing in the comparison of insurance products – between 2010 and 2020 we went from about 124,000 to 66,000 per year. A providential decline that was concentrated to a greater extent between 2019 and 2020, probably due to the pandemic. Yet, despite this reduction, according to Eurostat Italy is unable to take off the black jersey in the Old Continent, with 219 vehicles stolen per 100,000 inhabitants in 2019, followed by France with 205 and Greece with 201.
And obviously the data changes from Region to Region. In 2020, for every thousand cars in circulation, Campania is in the lead with a value of 5.01, followed by Puglia (4.63), Lazio (3.09) and Sicily (2.32), against an average national of 1.67. On the other hand, we find Regions where thefts are almost zero, such as Valle d’Aosta (0.07) and Trentino-Alto Adige (0.08).
In terms of insurance policies, costs follow this ranking hand in hand with a premium of 250.8 and 232.5 euros respectively in Campania and Puglia against 89.5 and 92.1 euros in Trentino-Alto Adige and Valle D ‘ Aosta. And therefore: precisely in the Regions where consumers should best protect themselves from the risk of theft, they cannot do so due to the high insurance costs caused by the thefts themselves. (fp)
