Carlo Sorrentino, 45, co-owner of the “Good Look” optics boutique in via Incisa in Asti with Carlo Belvisi, is the creator of FestivaLieve. In recent years he has experimented with the organization of cultural events with the «Indulgence» festival.

How do you live the eve of this new experience?
«It’s a fairly adrenaline-pumping situation, but with a certain serenity. I was more agitated for Indulgence. But here is a team with whom I built this festival for the city, as a form of restitution of the good that Asti has wanted in Good Look in these 9 years of activity, especially in a period like that of Covid. I wanted something that was good for the city, beyond immediate results ».

Why were you inspired by Italo Calvino’s lightness?
«I have always seen lightness as an important characteristic of things. It is not frivolity, but knowing how to cook with ingredients that are not indigestible. I don’t think culture should be something heavy or reserved for certain elites. The important thing is to sow, if something remains or grows it is a success. Lightness is a necessity: we have guests and arguments that are anything but frivolous. We wanted an important degree of culture because we are interested in elevation ».

What does culture mean to you?
«Culture is eroticism, in the classic sense: the pleasure of doing things you like. For me it is the possibility of making emotions, sensations and ideas come true and sharing these perceptions with others. It means bringing something to the world, according to methods and contents. Nietzsche said that art is science and technique expressed on a personal level, with innovation. You go to the theater or to a concert because the artist is recognized with a series of requirements that define him as such. These are a combination of technique and transmission of personal emotions, which reach everyone ».

And do culture in Asti?
«It means putting your hands in the dough, throwing your heart over the obstacle. I notice a degree of closure among people who make culture, in addition to the bureaucratic difficulties. Here culture does not network and there is a high rate of competitiveness, in a situation where few investments are made. It is also a pleasure for me to stay up until 2 am and push to organize. I put my heart into it because I am interested in raising myself and the city ».

What do you think it would be good for?
«I don’t know if anything is missing in Asti. There are realities that operate very well, perhaps a little closed in on themselves, not open to new proposals or needs. Comparison and constructive dialogue would be needed. It also takes a lot of courage. As proof of the difficulties encountered here, I make use of a team that is not from Asti, despite having made proposals to many people and realities ».

How were the festival guests chosen?
«We started from the main idea of ​​Calvinian lightness. Then there are personal relationships built over the years that produced the schedule. My concern was to provide a billboard that immediately positioned itself in a certain way for the city, without coffins with constraints that could lower the level of supply. So I invited national level figures who acted as a driving force for lesser-known realities ».

Who is FestivaLieve for?
“To the widest possible audience. This is why we have involved young people a lot. It must be said that when we started working on it in April, there were other restrictions due to the pandemic. We bet that the Italians would behave well and for now we were right. Now let’s try to let a new breeze pass through the city ».

The program

Festivalieve comes alive today with two appointments. At 6.30 pm at Box 19 we will talk about «Women for women. Female experiences ». Moderated by the journalist Giovanni Terzi, the meeting dedicated to the 22nd International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women will feature Simona Ventura, the regional councilor for equal opportunities Chiara Caucino and the municipal councilor Elisa Pietragalla, the municipal councilor for events Loretta Bologna , the presidents of the Industrial Union of Asti Paola Malabaila and of the International Alba White Truffle Fair, Liliana Allena.

At 9 pm we will talk about football and sport, listening to the testimonies of great athletes. The guest will be Gianluca Zambrotta, world champion in 2006, who, talking with the journalist Davide Chicarella, will talk about his sporting and human experience. Tomorrow the program opens at 10.30 with «Oh my god» from Chapitombolo, the circus school of Asti (admission: 3 euros). At 3 pm the meeting “Dialogue on design” with Armando Milani will follow (free admission without reservation). At 6.30 pm it will be the turn of Legolize, Samuele Rovituso, Mattia Marangon and Pietro Alcaro, the three students of the Polytechnic of Turin who create lightning-fast cartoons using Lego characters and then post them on social networks (admission 3 euros). In the evening there will be the party «Waiting for 27», DJ set with Fernanda Lessa (admission 12 euros, 8 women). On Saturday the festival will host Antonio Carparica (at 11.30), Vittorio Sgarbi (15), Dario Vergassola and Massimo Morini (17), Il Teatrino (18.30) and Leonardo Manera (21.30). Sunday closing with Burattinarte (at 4 pm), Luca Beatrice and Andrea Cerrato (4.30 pm), Tredici Pietro (6.30 pm) and Cristiano Militello (21).

Tribute to Lele Luzzati

It was the first step of FestivaLieve, with the concert by Miriam Meghnagi accompanied by guitarist Nicola Puglielli and the testimony of Sergio Noberini, president of Lele Luzzati Foundation. It continues until December 19th the exhibition “Luzzati, Calvino and the concept of levity” set up at Palazzo Ottolenghi (free admission, opening hours: Fridays from 15.30 to 18.30, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10 to 18.30).

The exhibition is part of the initiatives carried out by Casa Luzzati, which is based in Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, on the centenary of the birth of the great Genoese artist. Draftsman, illustrator, painter, but also a great set designer and author of poetic and original animated films, twice nominated for the Oscars. An author who has had close ties with the Asti area. The first is due to the attendance of the grandmother, Rachele Sacerdote Luzzati, who lived in Corso Dante. Then the one linked to the contingencies of the war, with Calosso: there he was displaced as a young man, a guest of relatives. More pleasant occasions were linked to the Palio of Asti: Luzzati created the official logo of the race just resumed in 1967. He would return as Master of the Palio two more times, in 1983 and in 2005. Furthermore, his works are included in the patrimony of the artistic park « Footsteps on La court »in Castelnuovo Calcea.

In the Asti exhibition, which is connected to others made in Genoa (one at the post office, in relation to the issue of a celebratory stamp and one at Palazzo Ducale entitled “Incantati curtains”), 33 original plates are presented that Luzzati created to illustrate the works by Italo Calvino. They range from the Italian fairy tales collected for Einaudi to the novels of the “ancestors” trilogy, in particular “Il Visconte Dimezzato” and “Il Barone Rampante”. These are drawings that show all the power of Luzzati’s sign, referring to the world of children also in the apparently causal choice of felt-tip pens, crayons and colored pencils. In some cases, the indications for the pager and typographer are still written in pencil. In this, as in the conception of the drawings, the lightness of an author who passed through the horrors of war and the terror of racial persecution is manifested supremely, but he managed to sublimate his experiences through art, maintaining the gaze of infantile innocence. flanked by the fun of mockery towards adults, represented by the powerful who are regularly duped by the protagonist of the moment or by destiny. The exhibition also offers the screening of some animated films, such as the Rossini ones (“La gazza ladra”, “L’italiana in Algeri”), the Mozartian “Magic flute” and “Genova Sinfonia della Città”, which reveals, to put it with Calvino, an “invisible city” in which Paganini plays De André.
