Cause of Death Revealed for “Rocky” Actor Carl Weathers

Actor Carl Weathers, best known for his role as Apollo Creed in the “Rocky” franchise, died as a result of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The 76-year-old actor passed away in his sleep at his home in Venice, California on February 2. He had been battling heart disease for years, according to his death certificate obtained by The Blast.

Weathers’ son, Matthew Weathers, notified the authorities of his father’s death and he was later cremated. The actor’s family announced his passing last week. Born in New Orleans in 1948, Weathers had a successful career in Hollywood that spanned over 50 years. In addition to his role as Apollo Creed, he had memorable roles in films such as “Predator,” “Happy Gilmore,” and “The Mandalorian.”

Weathers first appeared as Apollo Creed in 1976’s “Rocky,” reprising the role in 1979’s “Rocky II” and 1982’s “Rocky III.” His legacy as an actor and his contributions to the film industry will be long remembered.
