Cultural heritage, Liberty architecture jewels will be open to the public in Palermo

PALERMO – With the resolution establishing, together with the Liberty-Villa Deliella museum, also the Art Nouveau Itinerary – approved two days ago by the Regional Council on the proposal of the Councilor for Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity, Alberto Samonà – some important jewels of the Liberty architecture of Palermo will be put into the system, destined for public use. The itinerary will put in dialogue the area of ​​Piazza Crispi, on which Villa Deliella once stood, with some symbolic places of the Belle Époque: among these, first of all Villino Ida, designed in 1903 by the architect Ernesto Basile, which will become a museum of himself and will be dedicated to the memory of Basile himself, but also Villino Favaloro, which will be the seat of the Regional Museum of Photography, and the Villino Florio, destined to host temporary exhibitions as well as other examples of Liberty architecture. An overall project, which will also see important collaborations, on which the Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity has been working for some time and which aims to re-read a historical period and a style under many aspects, to further enhance the cultural offer.

«This is an ambitious project – explains the commissioner Alberto Samonà – which combines a vision and an innovative design of spaces according to the principles of urban regeneration with the recovery of memory, enhancing some important symbolic places of Liberty. In this regard, I am happy to learn that a petition is underway to ask to open Villino Ida to public use, practically embracing the project we have been working on for months now. The places of Liberty are many and the establishment by the regional government of the Art Nouveau itinerary finally lays the foundations for the birth of that widespread museum that will allow us to leave behind us the oblivion of past decades ».
