ROME – The effects of the production crisis and the consequent scarcity of new cars available, first unleashed by Covid and then aggravated by the war in Ukraine, are also felt on the rental sector. Federconsumatori has sounded the alarm and foresees almost doubled rates for short-term rental this summer.
According to the data of his Observatory, in the week from 20 to 26 June, the price for renting a petrol car, without additional insurance and accessories, amounts to 634.52 euros, which is 67% higher than the average price. for the same period of 2021 equal to € 379.22. The figure, it should be noted, was calculated on the basis of the rates of four large car rental companies operating in the airports, stations and ports of the main Italian tourist resorts.

Among the main tourist destinations, the highest costs are applied in southern cities, such as Palermo, Olbia, Alghero and Catania where, for example, from an average price of 567.5 euros in 2021 you get to pay 659 euros for the same period of this year. The increase is more contained in Bari where, according to Federconsumatori estimates, renting a car today costs € 549.5 compared to € 535 last year. But the greatest increases are noticed above all at the stations and airports of cities that not only have a tourist value but also a stopover in order to reach other holiday destinations. This is the case in Milan, Rome, Turin and Naples, where the increases are even higher than 100% compared to June 2021. In Fiumicino, for example, again for the 7-day rental from 20 to 26 June 2022, the average rates they are around 602.75 euros, 332.75 euros more than last year’s 270 euros, while at Malpensa they range from 260.48 euros in 2021 to today’s 633 euros.
