Doxa investigation, the recovery of the shared car. This is what mobility will be like in 10 years

ROME – If today, thanks to the fear of Covid, a certain reluctance to use shared means of transport still persists (currently only 3 out of 10 Italians declare they use car sharing services), the trend is definitely reversed looking at the next decade, with a strong increase in alternative mobility formulas: more than 6 out of 10 Italians (62%) declare themselves ready for shared mobility; 4 out of 10 (40%) to use diversified means according to the needs of movement; 36% are also willing to use only ecological vehicles, while 9 out of 10 dream of 100% green fuels. And the most prone to change are the very young people aged 18 to 25 (66%).

This was revealed by a BVA-Doxa research for the “Change Lab, Italy 2030” Observatory carried out by the French Groupama Assicurazioni, one of the main players in the insurance sector in Italy, which wanted to investigate the main trends that by 2030 will change the habits of mobility of Italians. Habits that 1 out of 2 Italians (53%) say they are ready to substantially review. Even if for 85% of the interviewees the “family” car will continue to be an indispensable asset (today it is for 93%) and 6 out of 10 will not stop using their car on a daily basis. However, it will no longer be the first choice for getting around the city, where the use of bicycles, scooters, sharing and public transport will grow considerably.

In 10 years, in fact, 2 out of 10 Italians (18%) expect not to have a single main means of transport available, but to choose from time to time the most congenial means of transport based on the journey they will have to face. ” Multimodal mobility is announced as one of the trends of the next few years – says Groupama Assicurazioni CEO Pierre Cordier – therefore the need arises for a multimodal and flexible insurance, which follows the person in all his / her movements (on foot , with owned or shared vehicles) and no longer the single vehicle: 3 out of 10 Italians would subscribe immediately. Especially young people who would prefer it in 37% of cases. Along this line, Groupama will shortly present an insurance solution suitable for every type of need ”. In the forecasts of the interviewees, however, the “family” car in 10 years will still be among the most generally used means (76%), preceding the owned bicycles (23%) and public transport (15%). In short, the car will remain a comfortable and sometimes necessary vehicle, but not necessarily the one chosen for any type of travel. For example, the car-sharing service will resume share.

According to data from the Groupama Observatory, the percentage of the sample who thinks of habitually using this service in the next 10 years rises to 62%, against the current 29%. Even scooter sharing (now used by 12% of the sample) and bike sharing (21% with a peak of 28% in large cities), in 10 years will be respectively chosen by 3 out of 10 Italians and about 1 out of 2 Italians. The most likely to make use of shared mobility are young people between 18 and 34 and men in greater numbers than women. The attention towards micro-mobility is also growing. At least 1 in 2 of the interviewees confirmed that they also own a bike and / or a scooter, “muscular” or electric, in addition to the car. Even if the diffusion of light mobility vehicles on the territory is highly uneven: it ranges from 65% in northern Italy to 38% in the south and the islands, passing through 50% in the center. However, the Italians all agree on one fact: the need for green mobility. How to get it? According to 35%, limiting or even abolishing the use of polluting vehicles in the city; for 36% using only ecological means of transport and for 3 out of 10 Italians (29%) using multimodal mobility for travel: more means and forms of transport, even shared, and less polluting. The most inclined to multi-modality (37%) are in central Italy, while in the north-west they prefer to say goodbye to cars in urban centers (39%).

Among the desired changes in the city over the next 10 years, about 1 in 2 respondents (48%) indicate an increase in cycle paths and a greater presence of public transport (47%). 1 out of 3 would like parking spaces hidden from view (33%) or a traffic ban to reduce city smog (30%). 52% of young people would like more cycle paths and 32% even more bike sharing stations. Almost all of the sample, on the other hand, expects the adoption of 100% ecological fuels (89%) and full electric cars (81%). There is also a 38% of respondents who want a total disappearance of the owned car in favor of shared cars only. And among the most appreciated futuristic innovations, there are self-driving cars and the possibility of having cars capable of lengthening or shortening according to the availability of parking (42%).
