Electric car sales: the Chinese challenge Tesla

by admin

ROMA – Electric vehicles still represent a niche in the world market, although deliveries in the first half of 2021 grew by 160%, with China and Europe leading the industry, for a total of 2.6 million electric vehicles sold by January to June, followed by the United States where 250,000 cars with plugs were registered in the same period.

Looking at the sales figures, however, it is clear that some manufacturers are excelling in the sector, awarded by the fact that they have long ago focused on battery-powered and zero-emission cars, as shown by a research by the independent research company Canalys published recently. This is the case of Tesla which holds the leadership of the category with a share of 15% thanks above all to registrations in China where the brand of the visionary Elon Musk has been producing its cars for two years.

Immediately below Tesla is the Volkswagen Group (13%) which boasts the record in Europe with the range of ID vehicles despite having paid in the last few years a drastic drop in production due to the shortage of microchips.

Third in order of deliveries is the Chinese giant SAIC-GM-Wuling (11%), while in 4th and 5th place, with a market share of 6 per cent, we find the Stellantis Group and the BMW Group: the first of which is pushed into success by The electric Fiat 500 and the various electric vehicles of the PSA brands, while the second protagonist in the sector with the new models of the ecological brand “i” including the iX3 and the super flagship with high wheels iX just launched.

However, the picture could soon change given the numerous producers willing to “attack” the market. Just think of the many Chinese houses, such as Aion, BYD, Li Xiang, NIO and Xpeng, which have multiplied the offer of models in recent months just by looking at Tesla’s exploit in the People’s Republic. Or the entry into the field of big techs like Xiaomi who intend to invest 10 billion dollars in 10 years to make its first electric car. We’ll see.
