Hong Kong Young Directors Urged to Target Greater Bay Area Market

The Guangdong Key Film Project Recruitment and Investment Matchmaking Conference recently took place in Zengcheng, Guangzhou, where Ding Kai, General Manager of Yindu Institution Co., Ltd., shared insights on the training of young directors in Hong Kong. He emphasized the importance of targeting the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as the primary market for contemporary Hong Kong films.

During the conference, Ding Kai highlighted the diversity of themes showcased in the 11 films presented, including the Teochew opera-themed film “The Beauty of Autumn Water.” He emphasized the potential of niche and art films, stressing the importance of quality over size in the industry.

With the rise of “split distribution” in the domestic market, Ding Kai encouraged innovation while respecting the existing distribution system. He noted the success of ‘Broadway Distribution’ and urged filmmakers to explore new avenues for showcasing their work.

Yindu Institution has been actively involved in supporting young directors in Hong Kong, promoting collaboration between Hong Kong and Guangdong filmmakers. Ding Kai emphasized the importance of telling local stories that resonate with audiences across the Greater Bay Area.

Acknowledging the financial constraints faced by young filmmakers, Ding Kai expressed hope for increased investment in the Greater Bay Area to provide a conducive environment for Hong Kong’s creative talents to flourish.

As Hong Kong continues to nurture its pool of young directors, the Greater Bay Area presents a wealth of opportunities for collaboration and growth in the film industry.
