England, car production collapses: lowest level since 1956

ROME – The number of cars built in the UK last year fell to its lowest level since 1956. Car production fell 6.7 percent over the year to 859,575 units, down a third from to the 2019 pre-pandemic figure. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (Smmt) pointed out that issues such as semiconductor shortages, the closure of Honda’s Swindon factory, Covid-related issues such as staff shortages and border controls after Brexit have all affected car manufacturers.

Factories have had to reduce or pause production in anticipation of parts affected by the global pandemic. High energy costs are a growing problem for the industry, said Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT. But there are reasons for optimism for 2022, Hawes explained, with potential £ 4.9 billion in investments announced, the highest since 2013, and annual production estimated to recover over one million.

The new data showed that factories built a record number of battery electric (Bev), plug-in hybrid (Phev) and electric hybrid (Hev) vehicles last year, with nearly a quarter of a million of these vehicles. zero and very low emissions that have left the production lines, representing more than one in four of all cars produced. Four out of five new cars have been exported overseas, with the European Union being the largest market with 55%, followed by the United States.
