Exploring Wearable Ceramics: The Fusion of Fashion and Traditional Karatsu Ware by Designer Maiko Kurogouchi

Designer Maiko Kurogouchi recently unveiled a stunning collection inspired by Karatsu ware, a traditional Japanese pottery style known for its natural colors and rich textures. The collection, described as “wearable ceramics,” showcases simple streamlined arcs and unique patterns that pay homage to the artistic heritage of Karatsu.

The series, dominated by a soothing gray tone, aims to transport wearers on a journey through time and space to appreciate the craftsmanship of past generations. The color palette transitions from red to warm gray to beige, reflecting the earthy hues found in Saga Prefecture where Karatsu ware originated. Touches of orange and red symbolize the kiln firing process, infusing warmth and depth into the collection’s visual appeal.

One of the standout pieces in the collection is the camel coat, featuring hand-poured dye reminiscent of the aurora-like glaze of Madara Karatsu pottery. Other garments incorporate intricate botanical patterns inspired by Ekaratsu, a traditional Karatsu ware technique that intricately captures everyday scenes and florals.

The exhibition accompanying the collection showcases an array of artifacts, including ancient Karatsu fragments, ceramics, notebooks, and fabric samples, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the rich history and artistry behind Karatsu ware.

To complement the collection, artist Yuko Mohri created a captivating soundtrack featuring piano, noise, and field sounds inspired by the sounds of Kawachi’s porcelain and kilns. The music aims to evoke the essence of Karatsu ware, resonating with the collection’s unique blend of tradition and modernity.

Maiko Kurogouchi’s innovative fusion of fashion and pottery in this collection offers a fresh perspective on traditional craftsmanship, inviting fashion enthusiasts to appreciate the beauty and artistry of Karatsu ware in a whole new light.
