ROME – With the aim of facilitating the mass adoption of electric vehicles, thirty European partners have launched the Flow project in Barcelona. A program that aims to promote a concept of electric mobility suitable for the end user for the benefit of the energy system across Europe. Flow, funded by the EU, will be used to test, validate and enhance the so-called “Vehicle-to-X”, which allows the exchange of energy between vehicles, buildings and the grid.

The initiative also intends to overcome the main obstacles encountered by drivers in charging and using electric vehicles and to offer solutions capable of guaranteeing accessibility to suitable charging infrastructures. “The Flow project represents a unique opportunity to better understand the potential of energy flexibility when a mass diffusion of electric vehicles is achieved – explained Cristina Corchero, coordinator of the consortium – This will be possible thanks to the union of the forces of key players both of the electricity and mobility sectors “. All the players in the sector will therefore be involved in Flow, from distribution system operators to charging point operators, mobility service providers, infrastructure producers and end users.

The project relies on the coordination of the Catalan Institute for Energy Research and is carried out by a multidisciplinary team made up of academic partners, small, medium and large enterprises in the energy and mobility sector and large European industrial associations. Enel is a partner in the project through some of its main subsidiaries, such as Enel Grids, which will demonstrate system integration at Enel Flexibility Labs, using the smart grid technologies of its subsidiary Gridspertise. Enel X Way and Endesa X Way will coordinate the “Implementation and evaluation in large-scale demonstration cases” package, which includes the Italian, Spanish and Danish demos. Enel X will instead participate in the realization of the Italian demo with its flexibility solutions.

“When the potential for energy exchange with the grid is fully exploited, electric vehicles will make a real change – explain the designers – To achieve this goal it is essential to test the energy flows and driving patterns of real users on real grids, and the results of this pioneering project will inspire policies and the definition of best practices ”. Overall, five demonstration sites will be built with the Flow project to determine the impact on different energy systems in the Czech Republic, Ireland, Italy, Denmark and Spain. (Maurilio Rigo)
