Forty million cars in circulation, the pandemic is holding back growth

ROME – The economic difficulties linked to the pandemic slow down the growth of the Italian fleet which last year recorded a decrease of 0.04% compared to 2020. A figure, elaborated by the Autopromotec Observatory on the basis of Aci data, which highlights how in 2021, car radiations were greater than in new registrations.

A phenomenon that has had extensive repercussions, bringing a decrease also in the fleet in circulation, although limited to a few tens of thousands of units out of a total of nearly forty million. However, the decrease, Autopromotec underlines, is significant since the last time this trend occurred was in 2012-2013 when, again due to the economic crisis, the level of registrations was lower than that of radiation. The following year, however, the vehicle fleet had started to grow again, while in 2022 the prospects for the car market in our country are far from rosy, due to economic uncertainty, the effects of the shortage of microchips and the lack of incentives to buying new cars.

The study by the Autopromotec Observatory then takes into consideration the type of power supply of the cars in our fleet in which it stands out that, in the face of a decrease in traditional internal combustion engines, there has been an increase in hybrid and electric models. A growth that, however, only partially managed to offset the loss of registrations relating to traditional cars. Finally, the analysis in percentage terms of the changes taking place on the engines of the fleet in circulation is also worthy of note, which shows a decrease in petrol (from 45.5% to 45.1%), diesel (from 43.8 to 42.8%). ) and methane (from 2.5% to 2.4%), while LPG is growing (from 6.7% to 6.8%), electric (from 0.1% to 0.3) and hybrids and plug-in hybrids which increased from 1.4% to 2.6% of the total.
