From «Madres paralelas» to «Qui rido io», the most anticipated films at the Venice Film Festival

by admin

Dune

First part of the film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s cycle of novels, already brought to the big screen by David Lynch in 1984. Denis Villeneuve is directed for this extremely ambitious and complex, risky and fascinating feature, probably one of the most anticipated blockbusters also of autumn in the room. Of great appeal is the very rich cast in which Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa and many other well-known faces are present.

The Power of the Dog

Based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Thomas Savage, the film, set in the 1920s, sees at the center of the story a couple of brothers, rich and very different from each other: Phil is a brilliant but cruel man, with a domineering attitude and violent, while George is a stubborn and fussy person, but always kind. When George secretly marries Widow Rose, Phil refuses to accept it and starts a ruthless war against her using his son Peter as a pawn. Among the most anticipated titles of the Festival we cannot miss the new work by Jane Campion, the New Zealand director of cult films such as “Piano Lessons”, ready once again to shock the audience.

America Latina

With “Favolacce”, their second work, the D’Innocenzo brothers have made themselves known internationally and now there is great curiosity for their third feature film. The two directors have simply described this work as “a love story, and like all love stories therefore a thriller”, leaving a great mystery around the plot. Elio Germano is the protagonist of this film that promises to be courageous and completely unconventional.

The Card Counter

Among the great authors present at the Lido, an important director such as Paul Schrader should not be overlooked, who four years ago with “First Reformed” (also in Venice) had proposed one of the most intense titles of recent years. At the center of his new work is William Tell, a former soldier addicted to gambling. Her existence, always lived in the shadows, is turned upside down when she meets Cirk, a young man who is looking for revenge. The boy and William have a common enemy, a military colonel, but unlike Cirk, the former soldier does not contemplate revenge. Oscar Isaac and Tye Sheridan are the protagonists of this film which could also have its say in the final palmarès.

Freaks Out

We are in 1943, in Rome, in the middle of the Second World War. Four friends work in a circus, run by Israel, which for them – more than a boss – is a kind of father figure. When the latter tries to find an escape route that takes them away from the conflict, he mysteriously disappears, leaving the four alone and without any perspective. The narrative base is enough to grasp the enormous ambition of this film, with which Gabriele Mainetti returned behind the camera after the success of «Lo Chiamavano Jeeg Robot». Will it be one of the most shocking titles in Venice or will the Italian director’s ambition prove excessive? To the spectators of the exhibition the answer to this arduous sentence.
