Bad weather and persistent rain led to the fortuitous discovery of an almost 3,000-year-old bronze statuette in the Greek archaeological site of Olympia, the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games. The small idol of a bull, according to the Ministry of Culture, was discovered by an archaeologist outside the temple of Zeus and inside the sacred enclosure of the Altis, after days of rain “caused one of the horns to pop out of the ground”.
He was transferred to a conservation laboratory. Based on early evaluations, the statuette has been dated to the geometric period of Greek art, between 1050 and 700 BC. According to the ministry, the burns suggest that the statuette was one of thousands of votive offerings to Zeus.
