Here comes the Strawberry Moon: everyone with their eyes on the sky

by admin

On the night of June 24 the supermoon returns: and it will be a … strawberry Moon: not because it will be surrounded by a reddish halo, as happens on the occasion of the eclipse of the Moon, but because this is how the Native Americans called the phenomenon, which coincided with the summer harvest of strawberries. Here, in Europe, it is instead called the Moon of roses because it comes in the weeks in which these flowers bloom.
However you want to call it, the Moon that we will be able to admire from 21 of June 24, technically speaking, will not be 100 per 100 “super”: the conditions for a DOC superLuna are in fact two. The first is that it is full, the second that it is at the perigee, that is at the minimum distance from the Earth (about 359,000 km): the Strawberry Moon will reach the perigee a few hours before being full, so it will appear slightly “smaller” than to the one observed last May 26 (which was the largest in 2021). However, it will be spectacular. And to enjoy it, there will be time: from the early hours of Thursday 24, as mentioned, until Saturday morning.
