Here is Pepper, the humanoid robot who is a personal trainer

by admin

TURIN. The humanoid robot Pepper becomes a personal trainer capable of following a person during a bodyweight sports training session, thanks to the use of artificial intelligence. The idea and the software development and, in part, the hardware of the robot were the subject of the multidisciplinary project «AI empowered hardware for fitness applications», led by a team of students from the Alta Scuola Politecnica of the Milan and Turin Polytechnics.

The team worked on the Pepper robot as part of the Pioneer entrepreneurial program of the School of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (SEI) in Turin and with the collaboration of Reply, implementing various functions such as, for example, the ability to count repetitions, correction of errors or the ability to show previous performances. In fact, unlike when using tools in the gym, in the bodyweight mode the probability of making mistakes becomes higher and it is at this point that the intervention of the personal trainer becomes important so that the beneficial effect of the workouts is preserved or even just to avoid physical injury.

Pepper uses advanced artificial intelligence algorithms to monitor the user’s human body positions providing a cost-effective solution for both the end user and gyms that could save on managing many people present at the same time.

The project was considered among the best of the XV Cycle of the Alta Scuola Politecnica and, to confirm its goodness, some members of the team have recently founded the startup Gymnasio which, thanks to the know-how acquired during the project, intends to exploit the potential of home fitness, a rapidly expanding market in recent months.
